Yes I did try it

Funny Matt back a few years we tried it with a small blue fish in the mudhole. wound up getting a 500+ pound hammer head. It is good to use with live bait for it keeps the bait way out and prevents line tangles with the rods closer to the boat. I did use it sucessfully in the Canoyon one year when the fish were on the surface and we could not get them to bite. We threw chucnks out and let the kite drift the bait out and bam one on! We used a smal reel with kite strinr to retrive it from the fly bridge rods holder. There are times this works well. but Ihave not done it that many times to give a 100% opinion on it. I have fished the keys and south Fla. with them for sails and other fish and worked well also so Never hurt to have one on board. Make sure you get the Red one with the naked girl on it LOL:)

it works well when:

1. you have small live baits
2. you have a decent amount of wind. even the light wind kites need wind consistent enough to keep them up. the baits (ie small bluefish) tend to drag the kites down.
3. i find them to work best on the hook. that way the kite bait can be kept inside the slick. if you used it drifting, the kite bait would be upwind of your slick.

ps the sight of a tuna eating a live bait is awesome.

I have been thinking about getting one and using it when I shark fish. I know the bait would be out of the slick, on the other side of the boat, but it seems like a lot of times I am shark fishing, I have seen tuna passing on the other side. It probaly wouldn't hurt to use one if they do not require a lot of work, which brings me to my next question, do they?

Easy set up

Matt we had the kite and used a 2" pvc tube to store it. Kept it on the boat always in case we needed it. Also you could use a old pole and small reel with power pro 50lbs and use that to retrive it. It basicly has a rigger clip and is easy to set up and use. The pole makes it very easy we did try other methods but found the pole the best.Hey noce 2 to 3 lbs blue kited out works great. The sharks near the slick won't pass him up so fast :)They sesne stress in the fish .

maybe this year

Each time I fish Florida for sails and we use a kite I think to myself I'm going to try that. Still have not tried it here in the NE. I guess it's the extra effort to get the live bait, carry it way offshore and keep it alive or hope you can find bait the right size. Then the wind has to be just right. Not enough is no good just like to much.

It is a show to see a game fish come to the surface after a live bait splashing on top. Maybe this year.

tog, funny about the Hammerhead, they tend to cruise on top, I was out with CaptainLarry one time and we got one that he was on the rod for. If I remember correctly, the fish passed us on the opposite side of our chum slick, and we had to throw a bait out to him, he was just cruising along. The kite would have been handy for that. Was not too bad eating either if I remember.

Me too!

Thats funny ~ now that I recall, the only time I ever saw a hammerhead ~ it came from opposite the slick & on top.

I used a kite once, for amusement more than anything else. We did have a big blue shark attach the squid hanging from it. As long as it is out of the way, I dont mind it. But when we had to chase a fish ~ it was annoying!

USE TO KISS THEORY-keep it simple s........

Boys,
Kites are not for us. They work good from anchored boats, where the wind can catch it and keep it in the chum. On the drift it ends up on the wrong side. Image hooking a 350 Mako and now you have to do the following, bring in the kite that fell into the water because you turned the boat and the crew was to busy bring up the downrigger, and then the mako mag. got wrap in the wheel, because the guys were bluefish.........LOL.
When the s... hits the fan boys and you got to much going on, all you end up with is a sad fish story about how big he was.
The bottom lines is three baits an the attention to detail. You must keep the baits in the chum!
That is why the downrigger is a bad idea. Why drop a bait deep close, out of the chum. Or a kite on the wrong side, they are tuff to bring in quick.
The only thing I am considering to increase my odds in a 360 range is the magnet. It can be retrivered quickly.
If things are slow and it is calm try the troll. The art or shark trolling will be another great post. Ask my crew if it works!
