I just had another fishing adventure that was synonymous with the 24 hours of Lemans except I had no pit crew. I fished for 24 hours straight taking naps when a condition permitted. It felt a bit like a marathon at some points because the location would change as I traveled to more than four bodies of water hunting for Striped bass, and Bluefish. This race/hunt ended with what I originally set out to do. Use one of my last two personal days left of the year that I must use or loose. I caught three 10lbs Blues, and one 28" one good eyed (after I caught it both eyes were ruined) keeper that I prayed to catch.

I was on Intel overload coming into this trip. I had good enough info that told me bass are still at the playground that JB and I love so much, I also wanted to chase the Hudson stock after I chase the Chesapeake stocks close to home, was definitely in the mood to get back on the Brooklyn VI for some more battle of wills with Bluefish, and I also wanted to end the evening at the tip. I was able to do all of that except meet up with JB in the beginning...the lure of 30's and 40's had me change my mind just as I was leaving. I had no time to buy bait so my snag will be put to use once I arrive. A bait bite is not the kind of thing I had planned but hey if that's what they want I'm giving it to them.

I arrived at 10pm parking close to a fellow Gateway vehicle gave me a good feeling. I went a bit East of where I had in mind to check on a spot I visited at the start of my Surfcasting lifestyle in 2013. A splash caught my eye as I was scanning the water in the dark...bingo I found the bunker! I snagged three, and dropped the fourth until I got bored...happens fast while I'm bait fishing...moving on!

It was 11:45pm when I walked west down the shore line of where I intended to bait fish until 3am and I saw the truck of someone that I know is a serious bass hunter...I'm in the right location was my thought. As I'm walking the grid one guy is coming off and tells me "they catching them" I said good I still didn't feel too optimistic because me and bait fishing don't mix. I walked a bit further and ran into to Lou, and V...wasn't too happy to see me "there" for the second time now. "Shaka! What are you doing here" I said hmm let's see I've got my rod with me, 6 oz bucktail, my bag on my back, and some bait...to fish!

I'm not a shoulder to shoulder fishermen so I moved down tucking myself comfortable between some unknown bait guys...I know this spot to have all the older crowd but not tonight. I fished until 3am and not even a crab touched my fresher than the rest bunker. Many folks left with a nice catch of the night but hey that's fishing! I walked around a bit to see if there is any action to the north at a blackfish spot, and eventually made it back to where I started to see if things picked up a bit but it was quite. I made it back to my truck where that Gateway fellow was still parked at 4am...to Sheep head bay for another one of my Brooklyn VI trip's it is.

This trip on the Brooklyn VI was lack luster to say the least. They had a big bass catch just the day before but today they were not chewing. I was still able to catch 3 blues at 10lbs each. I actually almost won the pool with one that was rather fat. The end of that trip set the stage for the hunt I had planned into the night...what I saw seem to only excite me and none of the other guys on the boat as we came home. Hundreds of birds working the wash...I made a B line for the location as soon as the boat docked.

I was elated to see that the action was still happening at 4:23 pm when I arrived. I wanted to first take a few photos because the scene was picturesque of fall time fishing at sunset but my phone was dead...time to start casting. It was frantic as many just like me were just arriving. Many of us drove where we shouldn't have but who can ignore a seen like that and fallow "rules" many were hooked up as far as I could see. I took note of what folks were catching on and went with what should work also...nope "pencil poppers only" caught a fish. I think I only saw two maybe three just keepers come up but there were all the shorts you could catch. I managed five before the action died. One schoolie broke the hook on my Tsunami talking popper, and I lost my Gibbs 3 oz that I modified a bit in the wash after the hook poked my cuticle as the sun went away. I had the feeling it would wash up west so I put the SP on and trolled it until I found the only pencil popper I have...excellent feeling. After the SP caught one more fish in the dark I moved on to where I intended to catch a keeper.

I arrived to the playground at 7pm, finished up my sandwich, and caught up with Avi for a bit as we spoke briefly about the action from Sunday...I missed out on that bite as well. The big girls seem to come out when I go home because I was in the same location Saturday night from 7pm to 2am and got skunked. JB went to where I was on Sunday from 11am to 3pm having a keeper on each cast...JB said he had to leave them biting, and it was all bass.

Just as I'm suiting up there were some bait fishermen doing the same. I gave them the rest of the bunker I snagged and hit the surf. A few cast in and I noticed someone coming towards me not looking like he's passing by...he spoke to me and I him. Then he started to look familiar to me...its fishing mania! I had a nice time fish/talking with him. Traded some info and we went our ways. He mentioned he caught a keeper already in the area of one of my bookmarks so I headed that way. It was getting late and this was a keeper hunt so nothing but the bottle would hit the water...nothing for a while. I had to say a prayer. I asked God to please allow me to catch a keeper to take home to the wife. She is tired like many of us of eating bluefish but I keep catching them. I eat one and give the rest away, and even all heads of the fish I catch goes to a friend that loves to make fish head soup...nothing is wasted. I got to the last spot I had in mind and caught what I thought was a short. When it came in I saw that one eye was in bad shape, and then saw that the rear hooks of my bottle destroyed the other eye...Dam it I screamed. This fish is going to be blind and surely will die. Something told me to measure it...28" on the button! I jumped for joy and even felt a bit emotional. I now had three blues, and a bass. I took five more cast just in case there was more action to be had but nothing more...satisfied! I was now ready to go home and face the wife. It was now 10:21pm and a good time to end this marathon...catch'em up!
