I was hoping that the wind shift to NW would help the fishing a bit. I forgot that a stiff NW dirties the water. Well at least I didn't get skunked.
I went straight to the spot where I saw fish rolling around yesterday. Had an hour of darkness as I got there at 6. The surf was still roaring 4-7ft. But NW (20-25) dampened a lot of the white water. High tide at 5. Lots of wash behind me at high tide, making footing rather treacherous. Air temps dipped to 50, nice cloud cover.
I started with the darter in the dark. Nothing doing and I'm still a darter virgin. Threw out a red eye needle for my first time ever. It did a great job of snagging crabs and sand fleas. There were moments of each cast, where there was great resistance. Almost like it got snagged. I don't know if it was digging into the sand or if the current was just pulling the plug back. Anyway I did eventually hook into a fish. It didn't feel to big. A wave suddenly brought the fish to my feet. There it spit the hook and ran. I counted it as my skunk breaker.
Then the light appeared. In this rough surf, I welcomed it. Then did I see the water looking like tea with milk. I did see a few fish rolling around again. Some looked they could have been adult bunker. Spent a lot of time with the bucktail, but nothing doing. Neither with the sp, needle, or darter. Raised one fish on the polaris popper and landed one fish on a pencil. Heavy surf and poppers, not a normal combo, but since the water was dirty, perhaps the fish went after the commotion rather than sight. I should go out and get a couple of chartreuse bucktails.
