Made it out again. What a bonus two mornings in a row. Started around 6:15 before sunrise. Barely a north breeze, water flat and gin clear. No white water except in the wash of the last breaker. Dead low at 6:30. Conditions did not look promising. Started to the right of suicide and, as usual during low tide, worked west on the open stretch. Had a three or four timid swipes at my popper and that's it for an hour. I'm thinking this is going to be a tough morning. I get a call from a friend that he's into big blues in the pocket. As I'm walking there, I take a couple of casts with the popper to see if there's any thing along the way. I did get hit big 2 thirds of the way there. Figured it was one of those big blues. Line snapped where I just made a blood knot ten minutes before. I retie, figuring I was in a school of blues. Make the first cast and nothing. A few more casts then continue west to the pocket. I get there, and sure enough, the blues left. I thought they were moving east and I had to leave by 9 so I started walking back right away. A couple of random casts here and there. Halfway back, around 8:15, I get hit big. Nice, I thought I found that school of blues and this was a serious fish. Halfway into the fight, I thought this was going to be a bass and it was going to be my best fish ever. Brought it in, measured it at 34 inches. It's in my fridge now all filleted up. I did get one more close to keeper on that same popper. Made it back to the first jetty, took a few casts for zilch. Considering that, I'm thinking fish that broke my line was probably a bass. Not a tap on bucktails, plastics, or redfin. Lesson of the day. Flat water, fish poppers. <like href="http://www.noreast.com/postedreports/view.cfm?id=155513" send="false" show_faces="false" width='layout="button_count"'></like> |
