Hey Folks,

This is to inform you that the south side of the beaches was alive with fish!

Since this morning we had NE forecast and snow... I immediately drove my truck to the Gilgo entrance and spotted herds of gannets and seagulls diving into the wash.

With great excitement, I saw big splashes and boils of large bass up in the 30-lbs. range harassing herring and peanuts along the beach cove (just east of entrance). The action lasted for a solid 1 1/2 hour until the body of fish pushed the bait into deeper waters.

Suffice to say, I released 14 bass, the smallest was 15 lbs. and largest weighted near 33-lbs.! I could have caught more but my hands were so numb that I had to run to the truck every 10 minutes or so to thaw.

This happened exactly at 7:05am- 8:30am, during the first snow drops and under the worse cccccold (howling) conditions. Temperature was approx. 28 degrees and the NE winds (25 knots) felt like in the single digits.

Then the snow started to fall fast and the fish swam away faster than I could chase. Afterwards, I fished the Democrat Pt. and nailed two rats (22" & 26") and found small pods of smaller bass in the Demo entrance (wash).

By 3:45PM... The State Park Police forced me out of the park due to the snow conditions! :(

As the bass season is coming close to the end... I am wondering if this blitz was the Grand Surf Finale -or- will there be more action to come?

Your thoughts?

Al,
Nice going, and here I was slipping and sliding my way down I95. :) Probably at least a couple of more blitzes in the works, judging by the reports I hear from Montauk, at least if those fish work their way down the beach, instead of heading offshore.

So it goes....

Good job Alberto.
I fished Gilgo and Cedar Tuesday and Wednesday AM - to no avail. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to fish Thursday. This morning, Friday, I ran over to Demo, but the road was still closed. I checked out the view from Field 2, rolling dirty surf was the only thing in sight. I went home, disappointed. Then I read your report. Glad for you, bad for me!
Just curious, though - why did you pick Gilgo yesterday morning?

Crazy-Al:

What did you use on the bass? Plugs? Tins? Bucktails? Rubber baits? Bunker chunk? Clam?

Also, are you finished with Montauk? I am planning on going on Lazybones for one last shot on Sunday.

What do you think?

Now Ya Did it Al,
I was all set to hang it up. I almost emptied the truck yesterday afternoon and I promised the wife I'd put up the lights and wreath Saturday. Now I've got to think of another creative excuse to get out again.

Joe(Prospector) what do ya say one more time?

Nice going,
Shag

Hey Al, I don't think the fishing is over for up-Island guys. At the very same time that you were working those fish at Gilgo I was casting away at White Sands in Napeague. I didn't catch anything but watched with envy as a monstrous flock of birds wheeled and dived farther and farther from shore until the white of their feathers blended with the white of the snow flakes. Maybe those fish will head your way.

Bassavant,
That's an excellent question! You see, it was a very prematated move on my part… the reasons why I ventured out to Gilgo was due to the following factors.
1) I heard there were bait in the area
2) The beginning of a Northeast wind
3) First day light
4) Beginning of a major (Front) snow storm…
5) Water Temperature / Fished Flood Tide (Bay temp. 49 degrees & Ocean water temp. 57 degrees)

Those are all positive fall patterns.;)

Hello Raymond
What did I use on those bass? Well, since there were plenty of bait in the wash… It really didn't matter what I threw because those fish were on a major feeding frenzy! But this is what I used… I started with a white bucktail and as they were swimming away… I used tins (for maximum distance).

In regards to your second question… Am I done with Montauk?
For now… Yes (unless I hear of another big fish run) ;) I am currently roaming the western areas because that's where the bulk of schools are concentrated. However, I don't think they will hang for too long because of this snow (sudden water temp. drop).

Hey Shag, To be perfectly honest with ya… I don't want to get involved with your family quarrels….But if I were you, I would find a quick excuse to get your rods out cause I am sure there will be some extra innings. ;) Also - You might want to ask "Prospector"… because I am sure he could give you some solid advice. Hehehehe… :)

Lyrastar,
I hope so pal. … but if we keep getting this Westerly winds… It will definitely push those fish away (deeper waters).
