Hey Folks,
This is to inform you that the south side of the beaches was alive with fish!
Since this morning we had NE forecast and snow... I immediately drove my truck to the Gilgo entrance and spotted herds of gannets and seagulls diving into the wash.
With great excitement, I saw big splashes and boils of large bass up in the 30-lbs. range harassing herring and peanuts along the beach cove (just east of entrance). The action lasted for a solid 1 1/2 hour until the body of fish pushed the bait into deeper waters.
Suffice to say, I released 14 bass, the smallest was 15 lbs. and largest weighted near 33-lbs.! I could have caught more but my hands were so numb that I had to run to the truck every 10 minutes or so to thaw.
This happened exactly at 7:05am- 8:30am, during the first snow drops and under the worse cccccold (howling) conditions. Temperature was approx. 28 degrees and the NE winds (25 knots) felt like in the single digits.
Then the snow started to fall fast and the fish swam away faster than I could chase. Afterwards, I fished the Democrat Pt. and nailed two rats (22" & 26") and found small pods of smaller bass in the Demo entrance (wash).
By 3:45PM... The State Park Police forced me out of the park due to the snow conditions!
As the bass season is coming close to the end... I am wondering if this blitz was the Grand Surf Finale -or- will there be more action to come?
Your thoughts?
