I fished an Atom Popper for the first time this weekend and got 2 ****tail blues in the Sound Off Eaton's Neck. I was throwing the lures to the beach from my boat, following the directiions of 2 short turns of the spinner reel, with a twitch up on the second to get a splash. Is this the only way to fish these lures? What are the different ways to fish these lures and what types of structure/area works best for them?

Thanks plugger. I will try it in the rips if I see the fish aren't hugging the bottom. What I was doing was casting into the rock piles in shallow, still, water from my boat and working it back toward me, yielding only 2 coctails.

I have found that with with bass they tend to like a slower retrieve and seem to crash the plug just as it comes to a halt. Also, I have had many days when the bass just smack the plug with their tail, talk about frustrating, thats when I will vary how I walk or dance the plug.

Hello usblues

There are many ways to use a popper and the classic patterns is exactly what Pluggers posted! seacups also brings out another important factor when targeting bass… it is crucial to slow it down!

It ultimately boils down to "STRUCTURE"! Work any shore points, rocky areas, marshes, pockets and cuts along the shorelines coinciding with deep water and you will find the ultimate popping conditions. Also, if you want to increase your success ratio… work it during first and last light and on calm conditions!

Other popping plug opportunities is when you see herds of baitfish being ambushed to the surface and by trying to match the bait (size and color) near the surface… you will see some incredible explosive strikes! ;)

There are slews of popping plugs in the market.
Just wondering, what is your favorite popping plug and why?
