There has been a recent post about stripers caught in the East River in the East 90's , and I've read in "The Fisherman" about striper fishing further up the Hudson. Has anybody fished off the 69th Street West Side Pier, or the Boat Basin, or anyplace else on the West Side of Manhattan? Any luck? Bait or lures?

Much appreciate all info. Thanks!

I fished 69th years ago. Used to live 66 & WEA. There's a neat spot where line of rocks splits out like a v away from shore. Look for it at low tide. I'd suspect the backside could be good. Try in and around that. Conventional wisdom on river seems to be bait with blood and sandworms leading the way. Finding bloods in the city was tough. I recall a pet store somewhere had them. Capital Tackle at 212-929-6132 might be able to quote source. Boat guys swear by live herring up river. Bunker chunk get's used as well. At $10 and even $12 a dozen for the bloods, many are switching to sands and claiming same or better success. I must confess I have yet to pull a striper out of the river. Haven't tried in many years. Big cats, eels, crabs, no striper. High snag potential. I'm trying those new fish finder rigs you can find at Cabelas with a plastic tab. If weight hangs up, plastic tab should break away so you lose lead but keep critical rig.

68th St, Hudson Fishing

Hay sorry for the late input just saw the blog.

I ride down the west to work, from 158th St. to wall St.

I see guys fishing in 3 spots often along this route.

1) Houston St. S end. 2)59th St. up to 68th pier. 3)River bank state park north end to GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE.

Starting with 68th St.(2) decent spot. I personally get more fish out near the end at the curve fishing south toward the pilings; with tide or slack tide. No biggons but good reading breaks. fishing north I have seen big stripers pulled out. regulars like it. there are to guys that fish there all the time, locals, friendly. they can give you the low down. Bunker and worms are the ticket. pet shop on 125th St. near the Fire Dpt. has bait most times.

Next (3) not for the faint of heart. Spotted fishing. rocks and critters. minimal parking (145 enter through 125 and 158thst. WS/HWY exit)long walks. they also get fish, I've seen them.

Finally (1)w 1oth St. pier does allow fishing but locals and Parks Dpt. Supervisor said guys get more fish and better fish off the south side of the Houston street pier. I took that advise and had a good time w/ schoolies one day last year.

I hope this helps. tight lines. rhh.

Stopped by 69th Street Pier today....

...while bicycling down the Hudson Bike path. A good number of fishermen, a number of reported striped bass and one reported trout (?!). Lovely area -- much nicer setting than the East River -- though who knows if there's any better chance of catching fish. I'll try it tonight or soon, report back.

Most using bait, one couple using lures (e.g., bass assassins, etc).

Thanks for the input.

Anything doing lately?

Haven't been out -- I've been assuming that stripers and blues have moved north until they return in the fall, but I've been wrong before. Has anyone caught anything lately? Bait? Lures? At the turn of the tide? Other times?

I live nearby the 69th street pier and have fished it a couple of times. I am new to the NY area (from the West Coast) so I am trying to learn all I can about fishing these waters.

On my first trip there I got skunked. All I saw was another guy pull out a Sea Robin.

Second trip was last weekend (Sat. 8/2) I was out there all day fishing with shrimp, clam and squid (picked up with squid and clam at Food Emporium and a guy gave me the shrimps).

Nothing happened until very late when I caught an eel. Wasn't at all what I was looking for but I guess it's better then nothing.

From what I have been told by the people at Capital Fishing, the waters of the Hudson are too warm for Stripers but they should be showing up sometime in Sept./Oct. They said that there are Blues but I tried all day with a variety of lures and didn't see a thing.

The currents can be outrageous there so I am not sure if it's better the throw off the end of the pier or somewhere in the middle where the tide isn't so strong.

As I said before, I am new to fishing around here so I don't really have any advice to offer but I will certainly continue to go out there and try my luck.

On a side note, I have also tried the lake in Central Park and the Harlem Meer. No luck at the meer and I am pretty convinced there is nothing in the lake. All I have gotten out of my CP experiences is a lot of aggravation and a few lures lost on snags.

The water probably is too warm right now for stripers, and I haven't heard/read anything about blues at this location. I have been Out East lately and there hasn't been much luck casting from shore here either.

Recommend that you subscribe to "The Fisherman", a great weekly publication which includes fishing reports on all the areas. Get the NY/Long Island edition (there are a number of others and you probably don't want to know that much about other locations.... The magazine Noreast Saltwater -- the print version of this site -- is also good and has the virtue that it is FREE!

Maybe I'll see you at the Hudson 69th Street Pier one day soon.

There is also fishing on the East River (see the threads here about that subject).

For some reason, people seem to do b est with bait (which doesn't help me, since I use lures!), and a lot of guys use the sandworms. As far as I know, there is only one place to get these and it's a pet store on 116th street, but I've never been. Ask one of the regulars down at the 69th Street pier -- they'll know.

Good luck!

Other NYC Park Fishing Locations

I have met people who fish extensively in the pond at Central Park and in the Harlem Meer and rave about the fishing. The harlem meer is stocked by the City -- they even have "fish-a-thons" during the Summer when they give out cane pole fishing rods to kids. I am told that there are bass and (incredibly enough) trout stocked there, and there are probably carp etc there as well. I don't know if the Parks Dept stocks the pond inthe 70's in Central Park, but I have heard people claim to have caught large bass there.

Sometimes these get covered with algae, which makes them less attractive, but Parks cleans up at least the Harlem Meer. On the weekends there can be so may rowboats on the pond that it is hard to fish, but if you go out early or late it will probably be good.

Check my Harlem Meer post thread in the freshwater forum.

I killed it there last weekend. A dozen largemouths on Saturday and a couple more on Sunday.

The pond, on the other hand, is a joke. I have seen carp in it but it's so full of boaters and dogs that the fish in there are probably freaked out all of the time.

Also, the pond seems more shallow. All I have done in the pond is lost lures.

There is also a pond in the lower eastern corner of the park that I have seen a lot of bass in. I don't see any signs anywhere saying you cannot fish there but I have not hit it yet.

Finally...there is another location within the park that I have been told has great smallies. Problem is it is restricted to fishing (although people obviously still do it).

Remember....all the fishing in CP is catch and release.

Went down to my pier last night to do some evening fishing.

There was a "movie night" on the pier and I couldn't get to the end of the pier. DOH!

Saw a lot of baitfish activity and tried for about an hour before giving up as it just kept getting more and more crowded with all the people coming to see the movie.

Luckily...last night was the last showing of the season.

Went down to the Hudson again on Sunday afternoon.

Tide was high and current was ripping.

Tried a Berkley Gulp bloodworm anchored down by a 4 OZ weight which still did not seem to be enough....nada

Stayed through the slack tide...still nothing. Not even a nibble.

Saw a guy catch a bunch of little things (I honestly had no idea what they were) and one fluke.

Otherwise another uneventful day on the Hudson.

On a side note...the smaller pond that I mentioned in CP. The one in the southeast corner (I believe it is called "The Pond" whereas the one with the rowboats is "The Lake")

Fished it for awhile on Saturday. Was having fun catching some smaller sized largemouths. Probably about 8 caught in about an hour. They were only about 5 to 8 inches or so. Still, they fight hard.

I was about to call it a day when I was watching my worm coming back to me and then get swallowed up by a much bigger LM similar to the ones I had caught in the Meer. Around 13 inches long but not a lot of bulk to them.

Some old bag started on me saying "young man...you are not allowed to fish here" I politely told her that if she could point me to where there was a sign saying that I could not fish there then I would stop.

I think she went off to find someone and then forgot about me.

Hudson River Piers

Back from vacation -- how I hate the "re-entry"! -- hope to get out early mornings or evenings. Will keep you posted.

Was Out East, nothing much doing from the beaches on the South Fork.

Good luck everybody.
