I went to three places in my area including sports authority today looking to buy a license. They all said their computers were down and the DEC had not fixed it yet, after a couple of months. So now I can't fish the spring stocking because this beauracratic snafu? I wonder how far I'd get if I told an officer my trouble with a fish in my hand. Ed

Just call around to your local B&T's ask them if they have the licenses. I know alot of them won't because it is a real hassle and they only make about a buck off each license. It is definetely better to go small and local but if you can't then you can't.

It is really much more diificult these days now that they went electronic. The problem is that they only allow a dedicated dial up line. No cable modems or anything like that.

New York seems to be years behind in the sportsmans license area, it should all be available online for everyone. Check out the Florida system, not only is it easy to get a license online, you can also pick the start date for it and it goes a year from then ( if you choose annual ) or you can set up a short term license ahead of time for just the time you plan to be there to use it. It works, I am sure it makes money for them by getting more people licensed, and if more people are fishing, it probably brings more business to B&T shops.

Lifetime license???

If you're buying a fishing license as a yearly thing, consider buying the lifetime license. It will be cheaper in the long run, good even if you move out of state and they're mailed to you every year at the address you choose. Info available at NYS DEC on line.
This is merely a suggestion to avoid any future problems.
Good Luck

I just went to Walmart in Middle Island today. Although it was tough to find someone in the sporting goods department I was able to get my license. BTW, 350 bucks for a lifetime license is kind of pricey unless you get it in your teens. At 19 bucks a year it would take a little over 18 years to pay for itself... Does anyone know where they'll be 10 years from now? Not me.

Last year I had a day to get a license due to last minute plans to go out on my Dad's boat on Lake Champlain and to the river down the block from his house. After work I tried two B&T's whose computers were already closed for the day. Then Sports Authority whose computers were down due to remodeling. Finally, I went to Wal-mart in Riverhead. I walked in and walked out with a license FORTY MINUTES later. The boneheads couldn't find anyone who could use the computer.
This year I went to Terminal Tackle, after a few minutes of shootin the breeze it took a whole 3 minutes.
