Black Dog is also a small open drift boat that takes six at about 75/man and I think they are a bit south of w.palm and also the Helen S & fish city pride headboats out of Pompano are good and they are also south of there. You can also check the blue heron fleet headboats, but I don't know of any charters.

My brother and I did one of the nite trips out of Lantana last year and it was a total tourist trap with unkind mates, so try and ask around.

Also try Floridasportsman.com

I've fished the Samana - open charter downeast style boat out of Jupiter, and Sail King Charters - 27'? Dusky with Capt. Rob - he posts here sometimes as he is a displaced yankee. Great Captain, worked hard to find me some fish, and a lot of fun to fish with - ended the day with Spanish, bunch of mahi, a fat fat albert, couple small sharks and a nice sized sail. He's more expensive than a party boat but less than those battlewagons at Sailfish Marina.

Being from the West Palm area, I have fished on most of the party boats mentioned. (I actually worked on 1 for 10 years) All are good, I personally have had great experiences on the boat in Lantana (Lady K) however the night trips can be hit or miss. I have had great trips on the Sea Mist (Boynton) and Blue Heron (Riviera and Jupiter) The Helen S and Fish City Pride (as mentioned before) are great too, but pretty far from WPB considerning the other options are much closer. (BTW Sea Mist & Lady K are South of WPB. Samana, Black Dog, Blue Heron are all in Jupiter North of WPB, a second Blue Heron Boat, as well as the Sea Horse are out of Riviera Beach (in between Jupiter and WPB)

Depending on your experience level fishing there (there is a definate learning curve to the bottom fishing (especially mutton snappers, etc) The smaller "open boats" (Black Dog, Samana, Sea Horse etc)(They all have websites) might be best as you would get more "hands on" help with only 6-10 customers instead of 30. But also about twice the price.
For catching pelagics (king mackeral, dolphin, etc. Your chances are similar on any of them. On the day trips, false albacore (they call them bonito) will be everywhere so at the very least you should have plenty of action.

I might suggest trying one of each (big boat/small boat) just to see the difference for future trips. If you did that I would suggest the small boat first (again for the learning curve).
Its very similar to fluking, blackfish etc, its no accident that a sharpies account for a big percentage of the best fish. But once you learn the diffences between the way they fish compared to up here, you will do very well.

Send me a PM if you need any more specific info (tackle, techniques etc)

Best Regards,
Red

Thanks, Red, for your informative post about the West Palm headboats. Do you happen to have recommendations for any keys headboats. I am going down august 15 and I am considering taking my sons on a full moon night snapper trip out of the greyhound or the gulfstream III from key west. Would you do it on the 15th or the 16th? The full moon is on the 16th.

I have heard that is the time to try for snapper, so even though we have generally not done well fishing the nighttime headboats out of SE florida, I think I will give it a try. Also, I have not tried the headboats off the upper or mid keys and we will probably do one night in Marathon and I have heard good things about the Marathon Lady. I did fish the six man open boat in Marathon just before you leave Marathon on the 7-mile bridge (can't remember the name) and that was worthwhile too.

Thanks a lot

Bill
