It is amazing to me how many people have complete disregard for the people around them. Fishing the bunker pods Saturday, there were a good 20 boats fishing, and for the most part all working together. Boats would form a nice circle around the pods , so everyone could work to pick bait. Of course two or three idiots show up and decide they should "blast" in the middle, and then actually have the nerve to yell at everyone else. I finally had enough of it and moved, the bass moved due to the commotion. Then I slide down East a bit and I start drifting bait, I am in 17 ft of water, tight to the beach outside, and a guy in a 35' or so express feels he should run 25 kts , literally 50ft off my bow . Ironically, the boat name was
" B 4 Real" .

We had the same kind of idiot buzzing around Jessups Neck yesterday morning. A blue center console boat with three, 200hp Merc outboards doing 45 mph in between boats that were fishing, including two, 14' aluminum boats. You really have to wonder about people some times...

hmmm

Yeah I hear on the fish pods.

But in the 2nd guys defense, if I came off plane to idle and replane every time I approached a boat practically fishing in the channel, if not totally in it, it would cost me 50 bucks in fuel to get to the inlet and take 20 minutes for a 5 minute trip. Not gonna happen.

You don't coast or park on the Highway's in your car, don't drift or anchor in the channels either. It is the same exact thing.
On land or in sea, if you stop on the highway, expect to get blasted.

To be honest I don't mind a boat flying past when I'm drifting in the channels they leave less of a wake than the guy who thinks he should slow down when he comes by.If your gonna drift in a channel then it's something you should expect.

just to be clear.....

In my post , I am talking of fishing in the open ocean, not a channel, Maybe you're speaking on what HABS wrote ?? All of the gentlemen ran outside the pack and idled back in to stay on the bait, which is the right way.

As far as "blasting" people for drifting in a channel, the rules of the road make you resposible for your wake, It stinks to have to slow down sometimes, but sure beats hurting someone. The idiots that anchor in the channels, I think they just need to be educated.

So Many A-Holes, So Few Bullets

Deepline is right, you are responsible for your wake at all times. I see a lot of this on the north shore in Smithtown Bay. You'll have a bunch of boats obviously drifting for fluke or whatever, maybe anchored together and people are in the water swimming. Here comes Mr. I-Have-A-Hugh-Checkbook with his 35' waste of gas, space, and time at full tilt within 50 yards of the pack. I've said this before, he has the entire f***ing Long Island Sound to run in, why does he need to speed past the drifting pack of fishing boats? The same goes for ocean fishing. We need a mandatory boating license in New York and from what I've heard we'll be getting it sooner rather than later, like in the next two years sooner. I agree that idiots who decide to troll for blues across a channel at night or anchor up in the middle of a channel on Saturday with every boat in the world out and about are dummies who may deserve a good waking, but the dummy who gives it to him might as well be his twin. Those are the jerks you see on the LIE yapping on their cell phones in their expensive cars yet for some reason they can't afford the $30 blue tooth thing to at least attempt to be safe and obey the law.

If you are that guy on the LIE, I'm the obnoxious ass next to you railing on my horn until you hang up your phone.

It is really amazing how many idiots there really are.

People mugging you when you are fishing, uncontrolled wakes and a lack of courtesy is infuriating.

I gave road rage and yelling at people (pretty much) a long time ago. In today?s day and age, there are just too many idiots packing. It is not worth it. Back in the day, you might get or give a broken nose. Now there are some people that will do you in with-out much thought. Now this may be extreme or over the top, but life is just too short to have some jerk ruin your day or your life.

I think of people who have no boating etiquette as part of one more natural obstacle you must overcome to have a nice fishing experience. Think of it as bad weather or a tangled line. You just have to deal with it and try to avoid it. Of course if it is a very dangerous life threatening situation you may have to report it. Speak softly and carry a cell phone.

I believe the best thing to do is lead by example. I purposely go slowly past someone who just waked me moving up on a drift. They probably do not get it but maybe someone might someday.

Boating stress

All of the above described scenarios are a big reason why I am reluctant to ever get a boat. I go fishing to relieve stress, not to add to it! Seems like when you're running a boat during this time of year, you have to deal with the same b.s. as you do when driving on the roads around here
.

It's much more relaxing to jump on a party or charter boat and leave the driving to the capt!

you are so right! is some of the idiots on the water that ruin the experience more so than the prices. i can deal with $5 a gallon gas, i cant deal with idiots. im far from being an experienced captain, but atleast i know i wont injure my crew or anyone elses due to stupidity, and wont have any posts like this made about me on the internet.

The world is full of inconsiderate louts, loud cell phones, running red lights, tailgating, and a thousand other examples. Not surprising to see some of that out on the water.

It is not the world that is full of them...it is mostly confined to the NY Tri-State Area, (and in FLA to some extend too).

Most other areas boaters are very safe, and friendly on the water.

I keep a few extra 6 oz banks on hand for the real aholes...

About 3 yrs ago I had a Contender going full tilt pass by my Rod tip @ about 5' AWAY!!!!!!!! scared the crap out of me
....and yelled and gestured as a knee jerk reaction.. ...but they never looked back.....

lucky for me they stopped less than a mile from me on top of some busting blues...so I motored over to them tied on a 4 oz Diamond jig and waited for them to cast...and then let her fly...snagged there lure...unhooked --oops sorry....reeled in and waited again...oops sorry....repeated 4-5 times until they got the point..IMHO..alot better than throwing that 6 oz. sinker or cherry bomb.

common sense isn't common.

and the South shore is 10x worse than the North shore....every time I go there I am amazed there aren't more collisions.

all good reasons to fish at night

Exactly.
I try to fish before sunrise. By the time the a-holes wake up I'm heading home.

I fish in a 14' aluminum boat so I am a little sensitive to this. I understand that if you fish in the channel, you are asking for some waves, but there is some etiquette common sense that some people lack.
You should always give sailboats and small craft some consideration.

I dont ask for it myself normally, as I dont have to follow the channels. But I see big boats nearly swamping small boats because they simply dont give a frack.

I have tossed a sinker or 2 at some guys before. I only get pissed when the person doing it is a smaller boat. i understand the big guys cant always slow down for everyone but if you got a 21' or 23' like most of us it aint gunna kill you to go around people or slow it down. I had a guy zip past me ans about 2 other boats in the channel on a busy saturday doing about 40 mph. He came within 4'...no lie. I grabbed the closest thing I could thrown then reported him to the coastie. Best advice would be not to throw anything just use your radio. If I remember I just missed his wifes head, and I would have been in big trouble if I connected. I have calmed down since then. (2 years ago).
