Sportfishing Course Offered in Wading River

Do you wish you knew more about fishing and fishing techniques?
Are you new to the angling world and wish to learn the basics?
Are you an experienced angler who would like to improve your skills and learn some more fishing tips and secrets?
Do you wish that you and your crew would catch more "big ones"?

If so, it may be time for you to enroll in "Sportfishing on Long Island", an especially popular class offered by the Shoreham-Wading River Community Education Program. This spring semester marks the 17th consecutive year that this fishing course has been offered, and, as a result, hundreds of anglers have benefited from this one of a kind fishing program. Instruction will be given in techniques for catching many of the marine species which are found in local Long Island waters (Long Island Sound, Moriches Bay, and East End waters including Orient, Montauk, Block Island, and the off-shore fishing grounds). These species include striped bass, fluke, flounder, weakfish, blackfish, blues, tuna, shark and more).

The aim of this ten-week course is to educate the novice as well as the more advanced angler in the areas of fish finding, bait and lure selection, terminal tackle, knot and rig tying, safety, and chumming and baiting techniques. Students will be treated to the extensive use of audio-visual materials: slides, overhead transparencies, and videotapes, and will also enjoy the special presentation of a guest speaker (to be announced). In addition, each participant will receive an original computerized handout for each species covered during class, as well as free sample copies of fishing publications such as The Nor'east Saltwater and the Salt Water Sportsman. As part of the course, optional field trip excursions on a North Fork charterboat are planned.

"Sportfishing on Long Island" is taught by Capt. Jerry McGrath, an avid fisherman and experienced instructor who was honored by the Suffolk Association for Continuing Education with a 1994 Teacher of the Year Award. Capt. McGrath is also a former charterboat owner and skipper. He has written articles for sportfishing publications and has given numerous sportfishing lectures throughout the Long Island and New York Metropolitan Area. Capt. Jerry has also recently produced a video titled "Sportfishing on Long Island" which will be on the market later this May.

Classes will begin on Monday evenings from 7:30-9:30 P.M., for 10 weeks starting Mar. 4, 2002 at the Wading River Elementary School on Wading River-Manorville Rd. in Wading River. The fee is $95.00 ($105.00 for non-school district residents). Registration begins now. Telephone (631) 821-8117 and leave your name and address to receive a brochure with registration materials.

If you wish to contact the instructor to find out more specifics about the classes, you may call (631) 929-8337 and ask for Capt. Jerry. (before 9 P.M.), or you may e-mail an inquiry to [email protected].
