I was wondering what you guys do when fishing bridges. Usally i go fishing with a friend, and i do have a bridge gaff, for those big fish. What do you do when fishing by yourself and you hook into a 3o pound fish? What do you do with your rod, how do you work the gaff? Any help would be great. Thanks

You can try walking it to the end of the bridge.

I've heard stories of guys who use 80#-90# line just so they can pull up a big fish from the bridge.

"Bridges"

They are off limits due to the morons with mining headlights and kids running a muck in the car lanes.
Fish them now and recieve a $75 appearance ticket for the first offense, doubled on the second offense.
Plus a ticket for an illegally parked/abandoned car.
ALL of the bridges are now under the juristiction of the Bay Constable and are patrolled 24/7.

its legall

there are two places to park for ponquogue. 1 for the town and another place for non resd. As for fishing the bridge i have had cops tell me its not safe due to the amount of drunk drivers but that was is it.

Smithpoint bridge has been illegal for years now. Kids got hit by a car and that shut it down about 25 years ago if not more. But in the day I remember dragging it to the shore line, jumpnig over the short end of bridge and humping it back up to the pail. Good Luck.

BRIDGE FISHING

I would question the advisability (is that a word?) of fishing off of a bridge.

Especially as it relates to the release of undersize fish.

Specifically the impact of tossing any fish back into the water from 10, 20 or more feet up & what impact that has on the fish's health & it's ability to recover once it hits the water at a rate of speed it was never intended to re-enter the water at.

Just doesn't strike me as a sound thing to do........

Fish Release

When I did the bridges, I used stout gear that could power winch a fish up to 8-10lbs. at best, BUT, I never did. I carry a bridge net, that also allows for easy release, when lowered to the bay floor, the fish swim right out of the net. Other times I will walk down the side and catch and release. A thrown fish from any distance is horrible and should always be frowned upon.

MikeLang - glad to see that you agree "dumping" them into the water from "on high" is not the thing to do. I wonder how many other anglers however - just send them back by tossing them off of the bridge?

I would however question the effect on the fish - in particular the jaws - of power winching them up even a relatively short distaance. A 10 or 15 pound (or greater weight) fish is taking all that weight in his jaws which surely were never made to hold that kind of pressure. The fact that the fish may be "flopping" around while he's in this position only adds to the stress.

I just don't think fishing from bridges for all of these reasons is a good thing to do.

My opinion - I'm sure others may think differently.
