Not to bust your bubble but Full Moon is probably the worst time to go striper fishing. At least it always has been for me and I know quite a few Bass Men who preach the same . Better to fish on the new moon if you can.

your out of your mind if you think the full moon of july is the worst time to fish for stripers. it is the best night to catch stripers, i can bet the biggest stripers are caught on this night. i dont know why you think its a bad night.

How much would you like to wager?
Most bass sharpies will tell you that the two nights before and after the full moon are far better than the night of the full moon itself. I don't pretend to know why, but that what most of them say and I have experienced it for myself.

i think that is false, go read the long island, THE FISHERMAN and in there NO.27 issue it talks about the full moon of july. and the size of fish they catch. and my freind said the same thing about the full moon

Agree with the above statement if your talking " SURF ", but disagree regarding fishing from a " BOAT ".

A few days before and after the full moon is concidered prime time, however I've done well on the full moon also. Infact this 18th, night of, I too will be on the east end fishing points east of Orient. We do try to fish just prior to and just after the full moon but this was the only time available for us so we're going, and we wouldn't if we thought it wouldn't be good.....we will do well, because we have in the past. BTW..livelining porgy's or eels has the edge in my book.

Im talking from the boat not the surf. i know you dont want any light when you surf cast for stripers. but as for the full moon on the ocean you will catch those cows. i will be surf casting the night b4 and after soo we will see whats up.

I fish almost exclusively from a boat, and my experience over the years is that the two days before and the two days afer are much better than the day of the moon. After you've done it for a while I'd be interested to see if you agree.

I'd disagree. . .

I trailer out to Montauk to fish the moons every June and July. I've landed my largest bass of the season on the June full moon two (42-lbs) and three (40 and 44-lbs) years ago. Last year, the new moon fell on the middle of June and again, I got my largest of the season on the new moon night (43-lbs). I missed the July full moon last year, but was told by many sharpies out there, that the July full moon is the prime time to fish. Last year, I heard of one fella a friend of mine knows that his biggest ever 50+, mulitple 40's and many 30's on the July full moon.

This year, has been less than stellar for me out there. Fished the Early June full and had my largest fish of the year, but it was a low 30, and only have a few so far. I'm looking forward to next week and will be out there on the full from the boat myself.

I've also always heard that a couple days before or after tends to be more of a surf thing. I'm a firm believer in a full moon is good from the boat.

P.S. The night of the full moon this month is actually the night of the 17th, morning of the 18th. It's full around 5 am on the 18th.

Full Moon Fishing

Just curious if any of the nay sayers paid any attn. at the catches of very large stripers taken not only a few days before, but "on" the full moon as well as a few days after it.

I am talking Orient and Montauk.

Nuff said about whether the June/July "full" moon by boat can be very productive.

7/18 montauk results

Not sure if this proves any point............ Caught on 7/18 49 and 52 lbs. Had another close to 40, 1 in the low 30's and 2 in the 20's. I also fished 7/17. Had 3 fish in the low 40's and 3 in the low 30's.

The only conditions or times I do not fish are... I don't think there are times I would not fish. Any moon, any tide, any current, any pressure, hurricane, t-storm, 100 degress, etc. Due to work, I get out when I can get out. One thing is for sure, no matter what the conditions, someone somewhere is having a very productive day. Just have to find the fish and offer them something nice to eat. :) The moon thing seems to be a matter of personal experience. Everyone has an opinion. Cool
Get out and fish!!! My personal full moon date experience was during the DAY in 5 ft of water, August (3pm) bright sunlight, 90 degrees, lower western sound, big bass after big bass all while jet ski's blasted around my boat. True story... NO BULL! Go figure.
