I remember my Dad and Grandfather telling me of all the great fishing they had years back during the depression and right up to WWII. Back in those days there were barges anchored off the coast of Long Island and fishermen were ferried back and forth spending a full day aboard the barge picking away at the fish. Many diferent species were around back then like the Layfayete, Sheepshead and Croaker. It seems species just come and go. When I was a kid in the 50's we caught loads of tommycod, flounder, blackfish, mackeral. We even caught Whiting in the Long Island Sound. Times change and so do the fish. I can only wonder where it's all headed.

So did the rest of us. Who knew any better back then. Maybe one of the reasons they are no longer around today in great numbers.

Shinne**** Bay still has tomcod and spot. I have never caught them on a hook and line though. When we used to do sampling in the bay for our research projects we would find them all over. You would be surprised what's living down there that you rarely catch.

I'm not so pessimistic. I think it's a naturally dynamic system which has never been static the way we humans would like it.

From what I've read of your posts in the past, I believe you are far too knowledgable to think that humans have no impact on the stocks.

WaterAye, I agree I do think a lot of it has to do with cycles, but traditionally nature didn't have to deal with the mass polution, intense fishing pressure, etc that it has to contend with now. Hope is there though as nature has a way of healing itself. With tighter regs and more people increasing their awarness I think some ground will be recovered.

That was the "Three Sea Sons with Capt. Sig Signorelli? I fished with Sig & his son Frank many times offshore for Shark & Tuna. Both really great guys. Last I heard Frank was still running charters but that was more than a few years ago.

Capt Ed, You just had to go and say blowfish.........man I could go on forever with my stories of blowfish from Wantaugh State park to South Jersey, When I was a boy that was my favorite fishing memories. Well that was a long time ago and I havent seen any Blowfish caught in a long long time. But lately Ive been hearing reports of them starting a comeback so all may not be lost. I remember catching monster cod when I was younger then they seemed to deminish in size and quantity, now this year Ive been hearing reports of the best Cod trips in years, so maybe it is all a cycle that goes around, I certainly hope so. Untill I know for sure Ill be checkin out them blowfish rumors.

I have seen blowfish, but only ones about 2 inches long. When i was 6, I would go after minnows with nets in LIS, and that summer i came across three of them little critters. Another oddity I have come across is a fish I would say looks like a juvenile pompano. It looks like one in every aspect, except the 2nd dorsal fins are really long. Anyone know what it is?

You are correct Chinacat. Blowfish are a perfect example.

Almost undoubtedly a look down. We used to catch them for the fish tank.

Wow, when I started this I didn't even think of Blowfish, "chicken of the sea", and Kingfish. Haven't caught either in many years. My folks used to rent a bungalow in Rockaway, beach 98th street, for the summer. I fished every single inch of the bay side. I caught a lot of Blowfish back then plus the occassional Sheepshead. Spent most of my time wading the shallows on the other side of the Cross Bay bridge snagging the occssional Blue Claw. Man those were great summers. Fished like crazy until one summer when I discovered girls. Fishing hasn't been the same since.

Ken,
There were 2 boats with sons in the name. The Three Sons was run by the Braun family. I know Jim Braun ran it in the 80s and I think his dad ran it before that.

Then there was the 3 Sea Sons. I don't know who ran that one.

I grew up in the backbays around I.P and O.C and what happen to all the scungillis we used to catch in the crab traps or the occasional seahorse in the killy traps. One year by Peters clam bar there was a small looked like a rooster fish swimming around the docks at K&K.

I used to catch blowfish in the Sound all the time 20-ish years ago, they were easier to catch than Sea Robins! I also remember stories of my grandmother sitting on the beach on the Sound and filling a bucket with "chicken of the sea". I haven't caught blowfish in years in the Sound, and definitely not in any numbers. As for the South Bay, they come up pretty regular in crab pots still...
