It's wierd that you found it that far down the Hudson. Traditionally they are a freshwater fish, and the Hudson is brackish at times up to Poughkeepsie. However, if it has been very rainy, the runoff can make the river fresh to a more southern point. I also believe that at different depths (up to 200 feet) at some points there is a difference in Salt / Freshwater, with one sitting on top of the other due to runoff. Maybe this played a role in the fish getting so far south. Also, it looks like it has been dead for a while, glazed eyes, and slimy, and the current could being it that far rather quickly (within a day). Looks like a small one too, those things get huge!! When I lived upstate on the Delaware River, we used to snag them with treble hooks, then hold on!!! Also used to chum with corn in Cayuga lake, and drop a hook filled with corn on the bottom, they are a good fight! I know the amish people used to spear them on the finger lakes for food, but we never ate them, just a fun catch.

I thought Carp to be fresh only so I was surprised to see it. Made me want to snap a shot and post it. It was about a foot long. Never seen one up close, only in ponds from a distance and as body art. Has the species been on the planet long? It's prehistoric looking... Has a dated look like a horseshoe crab...

Just a wild thought it could have also been taken out of one of the local ponds, Kissena, Oakland, Pelham, by an Osprey and then dropped from his talons while overhead in the salt. I've seen them do this when gulls chase them while they have bunker, etc. in their talons.

A case for Perry Mason, Law & Order I guess.

That does look like a carp. I grew up on the Hudson and can remember catching carp in freshwater ponds in Verplanck and at least as far south as the VA in Montrose. Not much to look at or eat for that matter but they sure were a lot of fun to catch on a Mitchell 300, 6 lb test and a fiberglass rod.

Giant koi

Ill never forget the day I was fishing in manasquan river and a giant 22' koi swam right up to my boat. Someone dumped it in the river. Fished seemed to be doing very well he was swimming up stream against the current. Those fish are tough.

Koi doesn't have whiskers, Carp do. Could've been a fancy-bred Carp that is colorful. Too long to be a Goldfish. The commercial boats that come into the bay with Bluefish, Salmon, Red Snapper and other non-native fish that they "caught" occasionally have Carp that they hooked for $10 at the fish market, it could've fallen off a boat.

if your referring to the fact that i called them whiskers then yes you are right, koi do not have whiskers, they have barbels and there are 4 of them 2 on each side. all koi have theses whiskers if they dont have them then its not a koi. some carp have them as well but not all do.

that is a mirror carp, distinguishable from the common carp by their irregular scale pattern. Thet are not as widespread or as " common " as the common carp but are present in many lakes, ponds, and rivers. Like skates and dogfish, they are highly prized in the U.K.

Yes, finally mentioned... The irregular scale pattern caught my eye as unusual. Really stands out on this fish...
