I am juggling the idea of builing my own boat rods. I am not sure if I should start out with some cheaper priced parts just to get the feel for building a rod or should I go with better quality parts and try to build somthing that I will enjoy for a long time.
The first rod I wan't to build is a flukin rod, I figure if I am not happy with it I can use it as a guest rod.

Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Do you have any experience building or repairing rods? Have you watched anyone? Have you read any books?

Constructing a rod is not rocket science. A little know how, a few tools and patience. Knowing which blank to build on, which components and where to place them is the secret.

Here are 2 excellent books to read.

Advanced Custom Rod Building by Dale P. Clemens Approx. $30 Might be found in a library, in a tackle shop or on EBay.

Rod Building Guide by Tom Kirkman Approx. $15 Can be ordered from www.amatobooks.com might try library and tackle shops.

Check out

www.rodbuilding.org

www.rodguild.com

There is lots of real good info on these sites.

You can varnish wood dowels to use for wrapping sticks.

Does your local tackle shop build custom rods or do repairs? They can be a wealth of info.

I would find several cheap blems and build on them first to get the feel. It is a very rewarding hobby.

I and others are here to help out.

Capt Neil,

I have repaired guides in the past, but never seen a rod builder in action. After reading the wealth of nformation on the web, the repairs I have done were not done correctly but they have held up.

I like the dowel idea I think I will practice and read some more before I take the plunge.

Thanks for the good advise Capt Neil.

Thanks again Capt Neil. My plan of action to start is to pick up some guides wrap and start on some retired fishing poles. I have a couple lying around collecting dust. I will try to make the freeport show in Feb. Last time a was there was about 15 years ago with my pop. Maybee by the show will be ready to start on a new blank. I will be at the Colisuim show tonight, asking lots of questions.

Rick,
That article is what gave me the idea. I have all the components to build the table. An old sewing machine motor/with a foot pedal, some long pieces of plywood and a couple of rollers. All this stuff is just lying around in my work area, might as well put it to good use. Maybee subconciously I saved this stuff for this very reason?
