First, You must pay your Dues

Phishthetide

I can understand your frustration. I felt the same way about 30 years ago when I first started surf fishing at the age of 16. However there are a few basic rules I learned to follow:

Rule # 1 (outside of luck) You must first pay your dues and do the time. Do your homework. Experience and gathered knowledge will be your best teacher.

Rule # 2 Watch what the other sharpie surf rats are doing, what their using and and how their using it. Don't be afraid to ask them a question (but not too many). (Once you become a sharpie be willing to share your knowledge as well)

Rule # 3 Learn to read a beach and rips.
There are a few books on surf fishing that will tell you how. (Or you can hire a guide)

Rule # 4 Fish the various tides, moon phases and weather conditions at various hours. (Including the wee hours!)Striped Bass are nocturnal feeders.

Rule # 5 Find and support a local knowledgeable surf tackle shop.

Rule #6 Be patient! "Good things come to those who wait" Even if you don't catch be happy & Grateful that your lifestyle gives you the time to do it! After WTC attack I now count my blessings!

Rule # 7 Learn to live with very little sleep, and drink lots of coffee.

Rule # 8 Keep and record a fishing log.

Rule # 9 Don't forget "Family Comes First"

Rule # 10 It doesn't hurt to say a few prayers now and then! :)

P.S
The areas in which you live are all prime striper territory, especially near, around and on those jetties.

Phish,

Had to laugh. because I get PO'd when I get skunked every time. This sport is supposed to relax us right. Yeah right. Thursday night's at the west end bait and tackle Indiana ave in LB they have a fishing tornament 6-8PM weather permitting. You'll see some fish to about 12lbs caught.
Give it a try.

what tide runner said is excellent advice he is 100% right, i too have been frustrated but that is what makes the payoff that much better. more time u put in the better your chances. can't catch a bass when your home in bed. an hunting buddy's grandfather had told me one time when hunting rabbits and deer expect to put at least an hour of time in the woods for every pound the animal your seeking. translates to a deer = 135 hours of not seeing any for some people that can be 10-15 years who's time is limited. as for bass i think you have to quadruple that theory i'm approaching 28 and have been fishing for 24 of those years, 12 years in the surf and that 30 pounder still eludes me. but we will meet one day & i'll have fun until that day comes... BEST OF LUCK ON YOUR 1ST CUMMMON 40

awwwwww phish....

I know exactly how you feel buddy. For years I fed the fish at Long Beach to no avail. It got so bad that when I showed up, the fish would all line up and a dinner bell would sound. But then I got smart. I use plugs and tins now.

Play it cool

Yeah, good words from the Tiderunner. Blood, sweat, and tears. If anyone of those is left out your taking short cuts. Like our friend said, count your blessings that you have the wherewithall to participate in this type of activity.

Your wait will be so worth it if you pay your dues. Short cuts lead to shortcomings. Good luck and tight lines.

So True

It's all about putting the time in, even without supporting your local B & T and having a knowledgeable sharpie to quiz (both excellent suggestions) you will still figure things out through trial & error and that takes time.

It's really the best part, I went a whole year without catching a single striper (my first year of dedicated fishing) while it seemed all around me I kept reading report after report of the excellent fishing.

the following year I had a banner year and now I just concentrate on catching that elusive trophy as opposed to trying to catch a fish!
