Last year our first trip was June 11, 2007 around the Rock Piles area in 64 degree water. We had blue sharks up to 250 lbs all day long. Must have caught at least 30 sharks that day. The 11th is about 3 weeks away. Can't wait to get out there despite fuel prices.

Does anyone have a day in mind when they plan on heading out?

weather defiantly is good for this weekend. But there are no temps promising enough for sharking beside 60+nm out from the point even then there is only 57-60degree water out there which is nothing to spectacular.

Couldn't hurt to run out there you don't know until you try good luck to those who go.

Still Cool

Our offshore water is still only in the high 40s with some 50 degree water on the surface. In addition our canyons for the most part are still very cool. For an early jump, water temps in the deep must be looked at very closely in order to increase your odds of a successful trip. Once the canyons reach a consistent high 50degree to low 60 degree temps the pelagics should appear and start to move within striking range.
I would estimate the time table to be the first week in June base on our current weather patterns and the monitoring of offshore temps.
We did have an early shot of 60 degree water in the Hudson in early May which did produce some bluefin and blue sharks, however that eddy is long past.
Also keep in mind that the dogfish will be out in full force based on the current temps.

Thats an expensive trial run with those water temps. I was out a few miles off Fire Island the other day and temps at the surface were 51 degrees. My sat service has cold water out past Texas Tower and showing 50 at the tip of the hudson as of 5pm last night. Let me know how the dogfish are biting. It was 88 degree's outside air temp last year over the long weekend.

The age old problem present with this weekend. I am dying to get out there, but do you run short and save fuel assuming its going to be a beat trip and your just out to enjoy it - or - do you run far to the best water you can find and take your best shot.

A 60 mile round trip on my boat burns about 100 gallons. A 120 obviously double that
.

I am leaning heavily towards trolling/chunking Bass (Boring!!!):(
