Went to Trophy Tackle in Deer Park today and saw the new AVET 80w. John told me about these reels quite a while ago and now has the first shipment of 80ws from Avet on Long Island. My initial impression was that this reel is very light weight for an 80W. Turns out it is closer to 3/4s of a pound lighter than the Tiagra 80w about 1/4 pound lighter than the Penn 80 VSW, With about twice the drag rating as well, 60 at strike and 70 at full. Another unique feature on this reel is the handle and crank arm. The handle is typical Avet, ergonomically offset aluminium, but the crank arm it is attached to is about 2 inches longer than any other 80w or 130 possibly, meaning the combination of 2 speed gears and the extra long handle gives you a tremendous mechanical advantage compared to any other 80w maybe even a 130. This reel gave me thoughts of winching in large tuna from the rod holder or killing giant yellowfin with ease from the standup harness.
If you fish east coast or west coast, rod holder/chair or harness
this reel definately should be considered. Got mine today

Almost forgot at 749.99 it is 50.00 to 80.00 cheaper than the competition too!

Sorry I don't understand if you set the drag at 60 lbs at strike it has to be a lot more than 70 lbs at full. what am I missing?

The long and short of it: The 80 is actually rated at 50-60 pounds until the first few fish. Then the drag washer seats and increases in surface area giving you the 60-70 strike and full rating. The ramp in the drag is quick. If you played with ramps and bellevile washers you could increase or decrease the drag settings accordingly and change how quick the drag came on and increase the spread between strike and full.

I spoke with Harry from Avet and he assured me that at any of the drag settings the handle on the reel will turn easily. The crank arm is also very long adding to the additional leverage making the handle easy to turn.

Hope this helps.

avet 80

i bought one of the 80's im thrilled by it,i have 5 avet 50,s and 2 trx in my arsenal and am extremely happy with them.

the avet 80 is lighter than most others and allows more line capacity.it makes the penn 80s look like a piece of ----!

but to each there own i would highly reccomend them to people and the price is great to 790 bucks that is great for an 80.i love avet and use them for everything,i have the sx,mxl.lx,and there offshore and they are phenomenal.anyone thinking about buying one go for it you will not be dissappointed.
