While this report is late, I finally made my first cod trip on Wed 4/2. While fishing overall was very slow (Helen H) I did learn a lot. Having never used braid before combined with 20 oz of lead, was very different to say the least.

Having spent 20+ years fishing/working on party boats in S. FL, I got to be pretty good at understanding the conditions and catching fish pretty well, even when conditions were tough and most people did not catch any. Needless to say in this case it seemed very strange being on the other end of that equation.

I did manage 5 keepers while losing several other nice ones. Overall most did better than I did but only a few had more than 15 or so. (Most of the fish were caught right off the bat while I was still trying to watch as much as fish)

Anyway, the trip was still a lot of fun, and the fresh cod I cooked today was out of this world. (that was the best part). The boat and crew were also excellent

Thanks to all for the advice, I look forward to learning more. And enjoying more fresh cod dinners.

Best Regards,

Sebastian Red

Mike, When the fish did bite, they were caught both on jigs and bait, however the main "bite was in two very short spurts, one right off the bat and the other near the end of the day, Otherwise fish were few and far between most of the day (most of the jiggers spent most of the mid-day in bunks.

Gama: The boats I worked on were all out of Boynton Inlet (Palm Beach County) The Lucky Day (since closed) and the B-Love Fleet in Lantana (still in operation.)
I have fished on both the Flamingo and Dragon in Lauderdale (once each) and I did fish the Helen S in Pompano quite a bit. Also have fished quite a bit on boats in the Keys but the only one I went on in Key West was the Yankee Capts to the Tortugas.
Really liked one of the boats in Marathon though.

Which boats did you work on?

SR,

I worked on the Fish City Pride for a short time and occasionally on the Helen S. Then went to Key West to work on the Fish Finder for 5 years and later the Sea Legs in Dania, doing their Bimini trips. Do you know Reed from the B-Love? I know he was there for quite a few years before going off to the oil fields...
