After over twenty years of trying, I got my doormat. It was inch or two bigger than my large Magma cutting board(31" ).
Don't need to fully extend my arms for this one.
I only had a Rapala digital scale on the dock and it wieghed it at 10lb 11oz.
I caught it on a whole 7" herring rigged with a squid FishBite strip on a 3/0 Gami octopus hook on a 3' 30lb leader with a dropper loop and 3oz sinker.
I was in the Ambrose channel(sorry can't give more accurate location until after July 13, my partner made me promise
), at dead slack high tide. My buddy pulled in two humongous skates one after the other. So I put my rod in the rod holder and did some boat work. I took a look at my rod tip and it twitched twice. I pulled it out and tightened the line and felt a deadweight. I was expecting the line to start spinning when all of a sudden I got a big head shake, I knew then it was a big fluke. I reeled it without saying anything to jinx it and when I saw it in the water I was so psyched, I started cussing and asking for the net. After I boated the fish, I put another herring in the water and had another big bite that I hacked and missed, and then my buddy got into a fish that he brought up to the boat side and lost. It wasn't a monster, but it would have been another keeper.
