With all the talk lately about weather, I thought I would share this with you.
With NOAA calling today for North wind 10-15 kts. and seas 2'-4', it seemed like a good day to go out and slay a dragon. I had 10 miles between me and the JI Head Buoy by the time the sun was beginning to break over the horizion. Seas were 1'-3' at that point and maybe got to 2'-4' by the time I was crossing the 20 fathom curve. My destination was the Burnside. When I was about 30 minutes away the wind began to pick up considerably and when I got within 1 mile it was all 4'-6' and very, very tight. So tight, I could not drift without risk of launching a crew or taking a green one over the side was a real possibility too. Based on the clear skys to the North and cloudy skys above me and South, my gut feeling was that it was a front and would probably blow through. The operative word here is probably, but you never know. Anyway, decided to head back, North, crawled for the next 2 1/2 hours at 5.5 kts., and took at least 12 green ones over the bow. Not a fun experience.
Fall Season, watch your weather, - VERY CAREFULLY
Heard later from some guys that stuck it out, (bigger boats) it layed down nice in the afternoon.
