I know a computer science professor who runs the same Facebook experiment every semester. He invites his students to stand up in front of the room and show everyone their Facebook page on the big screen. No one has ever taken him up on the offer.

Why? They?re embarrassed, of course.

Moments later, the irony sinks in. Every one of them seems happy to share all those funny photographs, witty Wall postings and status updates with everyone on the planet. They just don't want to do it in public, in person.

I use it, it's a cool tool to use as far as keeping in touch with old friends from college that are far away. Facebook is far less childish than myspace was/is.

Also depends on how you use the site, if it's your inner child's playground, well that's a different story.

My wife's girlfriends joined a couple of month's ago and got her to join. I mocked them for a while and told them "oh, puleeze" and then got an e-mail from a friend of mine that he had joined. I figured resistance was futile so I signed up. Very cool. I didn't have allot of use for allot of people from my high-school but I have reconnected with some friends I was very glad to get in touch with. It also gives me an opportunity to talk with people I don't normally speak to on a regular basis. I am surprised by some of the stuff people post, but I don't have any pictures there I probably already haven't or wouldn't post here, or shutterfly, or wherever. They even held a mini-reunion this past Saturday and over 150 showed up. Looked like a blast.

I joined about a yr ago after my niece informed me about my tenth grader Mike's page. Mike was...well, being a tenth grader
My purpose was to access and oversee a few things. Every once in a while I send him a little facebook msg to remind him. He hates that LOL.
My profile is still the silhouette guy, I have no profile info, when occasional friends/family send facebook mail requesting "add friend" I click accept, and have nothing on my "wall".

maybe I'm missing out on something. Maybe not. Interesting link, Joe.

I signed up for Facebook just last week cause Moe made me.
72 hours later I got {i think} about 50-60 emails from the site.
Out of all those emails {which I painstakingly checked:mad:} I think I remembered 30 of the people.
Out of those 30, I think I've seen 20 of them in the last 10 years.
Most were Deadheads, some were high school friends, and a few I simply have no clue about.

I canceled my facebook account yesterday.
I don't need any old/new friends.

I joined about 4 months ago and surprised myself by having a lot of fun with it. Old dog learning new tricks!
I graduated High School in New Mexico and it's been a blast connecting to old friends from our Class of '76. Most are now spread thruout the USA...east to west and one way up north in Anchorage.
My riend Carol who is a Dr. living in Alaska and working in the Salmon Fisheries
Grace working for Sandia Labs
Steve in Dallas at UPS
Greg was a flyfishing guide in Norhern New Mexico on the Red River
( he just passed away unfortunately :( )

Neices and nephews
brother and sister in laws...
Its been great and lots of fun while keeping it to a select group of people.

I've had it for a few months and it has put me in touch with people from the past which is cool. If I get requests from people I dont want to "reconnect" with I just dont accept them. I probably spend about 20 minutes a week on it.

I don't have a problem with it at all. Signed up to it, and re-connected with quite a few people that I literally haven't spoken with in 20 years. Met up with some of them recenbtly and had a blast.

For any single people out there though, I highly recommend it! Lot's of single ladies out there ;)!

Gina's on both Facebook and MySpace. She grew up in Utica and Poughkeepsie, went to college in Tampa and lived there for a while after and then moved here to Long Island. She uses them to keep in touch with her friends near and far. I do recall her getting involved in all sorts of "battles" and "games" through the sites a couple years ago, but I haven't heard her talking about that much anymore.

She got me to sign up for Facebook a long time ago. I checked it out and it seemed like a better way to upload photos for webhosting images, but I've never used it. I linked it to an email account I keep for sign-ups to things that I don't want to receive emails from, and every few months when I have to clean it out, I see all the friend requests, etc. sitting there.

It's a little annoying when your friends do use those sites to post pictures to share, and then send you a link to it, but you can't see them without being a member. So when I have to do something on there, I just use G's accounts. But using it to look at photos is slow as **** too. I'd rather people email me the pics to look at. Learn to use Powerpoint, it's a lot easier and faster!

I don't need the additional drama and BS from those sites. Not when i get it all right here already on the soap opera that is Noreast. I think now that Gina's been sucked in to being a part of the site here too, she's not as active on Facebook and Myspace anymore either.
