I crossed the Throgs Neck bridge today and there was a long line of cars waiting to pay the toll. The ez pass lanes had long lines while the cash lanes were practically empty. Why do people get an ez pass ? EZ doesn't seem EZ to me !

Hmmm...lets see...Go thru the GW tolls at 25MPH(EZ Pass) or come to a stop and give money to a toll collector, who really couldn't care less that there's a line on the tolls because they are gonna be there anyway. So they take thier time counting the change than wants you to lean over and reach into thier booth to get the change. Personally, I would pay a dollar extra if I had to so that I wouldn't have to deal with the discourteous Union toll trolls.
Also, I like to go thru the EZ pass lane on the NJ turnpike...doing 55mph rather than stop to get a ticket and then have to stop again to pay at the end of the ride.

I drive back to LI everyother weekend to see my daughter. EZpass saves me at least a half hour. Waiting at tolls sucks. The EZpass Express lanes are the best.

I take the TNB everyday home from work and the cash lines are never empty mostly full I fly through the ezpass on most days some times you get caught behind that 1 person whos ez pass is either low or not working then you have to wait for a bridge cop to scan it

Every lane is an EZ Pass lane. Cash lanes take both. I've never seen the EZ Pass lanes have more cars then the cash lanes. There must have been a clich in the readers.
BTW you get a discount with EZ Pass.

How about eliminating tolls?

Yeah ! How about eliminating tolls ! They should have all been eliminated 40 years ago ! Imagine how much air pollution and fuel waste would go away if there were no tolls, plus the time saved for commercial traffic would bring down the cost of goods . Sure, the money has to come from somewhere, but collecting tolls is the most inefficient way to collect it. It is not as if the money goes to repair the bridges and roads anyway, most of it around NY is used to subsidize mass transit. The tax should be switched to income/real estate, or dmv registrations. Imagine what could be saved if we did not have to build toll stations, try to make sure collectors don't steal money, pay the collectors including medical and retirement, etc. Tolls are just a just plain stupid way of funding government and probably 80% inefficient ( guess, I have no real numbers, and they keep those numbers pretty secret)
Another possible semi solution would be to insert micro chips in every license plate and convert every toll into a high speed ez pass type of thing, eliminating all cash lanes ! If your plates are legit and current, you have no problems, if you have expired plates, you have a big problem and this might solve it.
To take this rant further, whatis with the "gates" on the NY Bridges ? They could easily install cameras and nail all people who do not pay, the increased fines would pay for cameras and then some, and the rest of us could drive through without that stop and wait for the gates ! GRRRRRRRRRRRR ! I hate tolls !

I don't travel that much to worry about toll booths, but the times I do I'm stuck waiting in the cash lanes. My buddie has EZPass for his truck and one for his bike and he breezes right through.

I may get them just for the convenience, and the half dozen times I go to LI a year.

From what I understand, it doesn't cost anything to get them and you just pay as you use it and the bill comes in............is that correct.......

They link your ez pass to your credit card.If you don't use it often they charge a small amount to your card ($25-50) and put it in your ez pass account. When the EZ pass account gets low they automatically bill your credit card again.

Interesting. You really think that if commercial truckers didn't have to wait at the toll plazas THAT would bring down the costs of goods delivered?? Really?

And you DON'T think you should be charging the drivers who actually uses the bridges and tunnels for them but we SHOULD just TAX people in NY, NJ & CT even MORE than they already are??

If people DIDN'T have to pay $10 per day to go through the bridges & tunnels don't you think that would create even MORE congestion than you have now? You think there would be LESS traffic at the Mid-Town tunnel?

You prefer to just tax incomes & real estate more?

Didn't you just say "Imagine what could be saved if we did not have to build toll stations" but now you want to spend money to build new ones?

Not a bad idea. In fact there are already license plate cameras at the tolls I believe.

I'm certainly no big fan of tolls either, but ever since they converted to ez pass, I think the small wait at the toll plazas is more than bearable. What really slows it down and causes congestion at this point is the people in the cash lanes, so maybe you increase the cash toll to get more people to switch to EZ pass.

Best thing CT ever did was get rid of the tolls............

What really sucks is like the NJ Turnpike...........paying at every exit....:rolleyes::rolleyes:

as far as the money collected from tolls and gas taxes that is supposed to go back to the roads and bridges....................most of it never does......:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
