Hi,
Thanks for the response guys, put that post up and shortly after left for NC; just spent a week on the outer banks. Did a little fishing down there, couldn't get much else other than bottom feeders and small blues through the surf, but brought home a couple stories.
Hooked onto something at night in waste deep water, using a whole blue, that put my surfcasting equipment to shame. Shortly after, tried it again w/ a Penn Super Level Wind GTI 345 (5/0), Senator Rod & 60 lb mono w/ 10 ft cable shark leader. Threw the setup w/ a big sinker out by hand.
20 minutes later, rod was bent and clicker was going. This thing was stripping line for a while, but we had it close when the line got cut. I'm pretty sure the mono & cable got tangled in the surf, which wore through the mono during the 40 minute fight. From what I've gathered, I think bothe times it probably was a ray. Came up with a new terminal tackle idea, adding 5 ft of coated steel in between the cable & mono. Used a mullet of similar size to the blues w/ no luck. That's fishing I guess.
Anyway.. tuna gear. Well, although I can't say their tackle is all bulletproof, Penn are the only reels I feel comfortable spending much money on. The service is just hard to beat, I know a guy who sent a senator out in a box (took it apart and gave up), he sent $20 with it and recieved the assembled reel in mint condition w/ change back.
I'm from NH and trailor a 21 footer; 95% of the time, I'm coming out of Salisbury, MA. As far as I know, all I can target in my range is going to be bluefin and as far as school or giants, actually attempting to target either is going to be beyond me. I'd like to have a fighting chance with whatever I hook onto. That's definitly right about a 40 lb drag.. even fighting a striper on 5-10 is tiring after 5 minutes... with the 60 lb test & drag I'm only good for about 15 minutes. But, in the boat I've allways got the holders, and if that's what it takes, I'll plop the reel down in them. So.. I guess I'm debating if the 116's would be a better bet for the extra $250 a pair, or if a 600 lb fish is going to do the same damage to either size reel. Here's another question, how much line is enough?
