Last night I finished my 2nd coat of epoxy and this morning I go to check the rod and it seems like the epoxy ramped up onto the hypalon grip. I know I put too much epoxy on but now what. I mean it doesn?t look bad but can it be lightly sanded. Should it cut and maybe split a winding check and epoxy over that?

Any ideas?

Also any ideas on how to avoid this in the future?

I will take a picture tonight when I get home.

Hi,

Some builders go out of their way to coat the forward end of the fore grip with finish. It looks good and it works.

Yes you can sand it if you wish.

I start the butt wrap about 1/8" past the fore grip. This leaves a gap for the finish. The first 2 coats of finish I go just past the end of the wrap. The last coat I slide a bit of finish up to the grip to fill the gap and make it look all the same.

I install the front grip after the butt wrap and finish is applied. The only worry I would have with the epoxy, is once the front grip wears down a bit, you may have a sharp edge left from the epoxy. Rod looks very nice .

No I didn't take the checks I was originally going to not use a check or a ramp but after last nights coat of epoxy everything worked out good. I'm glad you like the wraps because there basically the same as the ones you did on my super seeker just some variation in the colors. I wanted to try and keep the same design for a matching set.

On the next rod I may try and make a ramp with 5min epoxy or maybe rod bond and see how that turns out. Right now I'm just trying different things. I just picked up Billys Book and now all I need is time and patience.

I can't wait till the NERBS Meeting at Trophy Tackle to hopefully pickup a few pointers. Thanks again Richi for all you help I really appreciate it.
