Has anyone manufactured there own brackets for electronics? I just bought the Garmin 182C and because of the design of the unit and the bracket, you can only mount it on a console or recess it into a box. I have a problem with space. I wanted to flush mount it underneath the eletronics box. It will not interfer with my view. However it looks like I will have to make a bracket for the unit. Any comments or help would be appreciated. Thanks Bubba

I believe Home Depo sells flat stock aluminum about 3-4' wide . Any metal or steel shop you could pick up that . Then bend it in a vice and drill afew holes and paint it . One thing I am not clear on is you said flush mount under the box . Do you mean surface mount ? I guess you want top keep it tight to the bottom of the box .

I am confused

Hi 5, (get it?)

What you want to do is surface mount the unit UNDERNEATH the electronic box. Right?

You should be able to mount the bracket that came with the unit upside down (hanging from the electronics box or hard top). The unit itself usually has mounting holes either in the center of the unit or on both the top and bottom...thus enabling the attachment you are looking to achieve.

Just to clarify, flush mounting is when you cut a hole in the material (of the boat usually the fiberglass at the helm area) and sink the unit in. Your unit now is not removable from the boat, if security and theft worries you.

Miketuna brought up a good idea, but I have found after market mounts for an inexpensive price that also swivel. Now, if you want to suspend the unit from the box this may be the way to go...so you can rotate the unit so it is always in your line of sight....for a Fish Finder for instance.

You have a couple of choices

1) Nav Pod (2 way swivel or 4 way swivel)

these are a little pricey ~100 for a one unit pod. Some are pre-cut to speciffic units. Others you have to make your own template and cut. They can be found or ordered through any major or semi major marine shoppe (w. Marine, Boat US, Freeport Marine)

These are sort of like external "flush mounting" systems....so you will not be able to remove the units from the boat.

They also make an overhead consloe for 200-250 bucks that will mount ~3 units.

2) Johnny Ray Swivel Mounts

These will cost you less than 30 bucks and they fit most machines.

You can still remove the unit from your boat...so thats good IMO.

The only place that I now of that sell them is Freepot Marine and they have them listed on pg 20 of their catalog.
You can also call them @ 516.379.2610

Everything that I spoke about here including the pods are on pg. 20 of their catalog...FYI.

Hope this helps you out,

Brian

Bracket

Ok brian, this should give you an idea of what is going on. This is the bracket my Dad made. I could not think of any other way to surface mount it under the electronics box. I don't think the nav-pod or one of those swivel mounts would have worked. Comments, questions, suggestions ??
I tried your e-mail and nothing would go through, not even a plan old message. Thanks Brian, sorry to everyone else for the individual posts.

My email seems to be working fine

I have gotten plenty of messages on it today.

Anyway,

That bracket that your father made seems real good and looks like it will work for you. The Nav Pod however, which Will solve your problem is just going to give it a more professional look...concealing the wires and all. However, it will cost more money...and the unit will be left on the boat.

Give your Fathers bracket a shot!

Did you check out that Garmin Accessory page....it has a mount specifically for the 182C

I'm no expert but it looks like you can use the original bracket as well. That piece where it says Garmin in silver letters, on the back of the unit, should be reversible. It is attached to the main unit with 4 screws. If you can unscrew them, flip the back piece 180 degrees and screw it back on - then you should be able to use the original bracket.
