Me and my Brother were chatting the other day, and we brought up the topic of having clam bellies in a chum pot down near the bottom, as well as drifting some eels around. Aside from the potentials for tangles, would there be any other detriment to this?? I haven't found an answer either way here.:confused:

Thanks for any info!

drifting with a chum pot

I wouldn't. You mentioned one reason which could become a major issue when a nice fish gets wrapped in the chum pot line, major pain in the a$$.

The other reason for not doing that would be that a chum pot is effective to bring fish around a boat at anchor when it has time to sit in one spot. If you are drifting I think the chum pot will not be effective because you keep moving and the fish will not congragate behind the boat. Just not enough time for the chum pot to really work. Just my .02.

you will definately draw in the scup

which could be a plus. i don't use that method too often. but when i do i will suspend the pot about 4' off the bottom. it is no worse of a problem getting tangled up with than a drift sok. its not as effective as while at anchor but definitely makes a difference at times.

Definately could be a plus if you're using scup for bait. Scup in RI are running large to jumbos right now, hard to find a 10.5 incher to use for bait.
