I'm not surprised, I swear I've seen some on my property in the Adirondacks even though the NYSDEC says they aren't there. The same goes for mountain lions, there have been numerous sightings in the Adirondacks & DEC say's they also don't exist. They say if you have seen them they must be pets that were released after they became to big for the owners to care for them.

i swear I heard one last fall up in the Adirondaks near our place, and the guy down the road swears he has seen them.

they are an apex preditor...if the food supply is there, there is no reason to think they are not there too.

what they do not mention here is that these are pack animals. They do roam alone but generally if there is one there are others.

personally I would support re-introduction of the species into the areas mentioned in the article.

When I did alot of camping/backpacking in Northern New Mexico we would have wolves running near us and at times howling thru the night.
When your actually in their world and you can hear them running...
it's a bit odd and I'll admit you want to pee in your sleeping bag the first few nights you hear them

Very cool creature and one of my favorite animals.
Shame when the macho hunters feel the need to kill :(
but I would be upset if my lambs and livestock were getting killed every night.

I was in college in Plattsburgh when the APA and DEC were holding public hearings on the grey wolf reintroduction program in the Adirondacks. . . It was a shame. The classic NIMBY arguments. My friends had homes in the heart of the AP and would have welcomed the wolves the same as they appreciate the bears that visit their property. I'm glad to see evidence of nature taking care of things on it's own. With the repopulation of the moose in NY, it's not hard to see why the wolves may be returning themselves.

The recent issue of the Conservationist has a whole article dedicated to the discussion of whether or not there are mountain lions/cougars/pumas in New England. It explains very well why it's so unlikely and how just about every "sighting" has been discounted by recreating the "sighting" or finding out the animals was an escapee or released.

I'd bet that 99% of the population of CT and MA couldn't tell the difference between a wolf and a coyote.
I've seen coytes in the Finger Lakes Region where I hunt. Only reason I knew what it was, was because there are no wolves.
I would imagine most wolf sightings are coyotes.

They reintroduced 11 gray wolves into eastern Arizona, in the late ninties, and soon 6 had been shot and killed and one was missing.

They rounded the remaining ones up and put them in captivity for breeding. There was one litter of pups produced, but someone killed the mother, and they couln't find the pups in time. The adults all had tracking collars so they could monitor them. When one stopped moving they went and found them shot, over and over.

Americans have an inbred hatred for wolves. They think that their presence means trouble. "Big Bad Wolf" has been beaten into our heads as kids. I don't think it will ever change.
