Headed out on Memorial Day, got a late start due to working the night before. Me and Rob got out around 10am. After zig zagging our way through all the boats in the inlet and a few near misses with boats bouncing off of each other it was nice to get out into the ocean. We heard there were bunker east of Jones so that's where we headed. We live lined bunker at almost every pod we came across and all we had were blues ranging from 8-15 lbs. So after a while, Rob said "let's head further east and skip a few pods". So that's what we did. We found a large school of bunker that seemed to be more actively splashing around than the previous pods we saw. On the 2nd drift while I was reeling in a bunker on my spinning rod, my rod with my bunker rig had some action. Thinking it was another blue, I continued to reel in the bunker I just snagged, threw him in the live well then picked up my other rod and put it into free spool. After a couple more taps and pulling out a few feet of line I locked it up, FISH ON!!!!! Felt like a good fish but didn't know if it was a cow or gorilla. After playing tug of war for about 10 mins the fish surfaced but was still too far from the boat to see what it was with the sun glare. When she went back down all I saw was the tail, I said to rob, that's not a bluefish, that's a f*cking monster bass. After about 10-15 more mins I had the fish at the side of the boat. Rob helped with the net and we pulled her over the side. She weighed in at a whopping 47.5 lbs. After weighing and taking some pictures with her, she was safely released. After that we picked up and drifted the same pod landing 2 more bass of 21 lbs and 26 lbs that we kept for the table. What an exciting day of fishing.
