I tie all of my jigs plain white from untreated deer hair and then dye what I need. I soak the jigs in a woolite solution overnight. This gets some of the oils off. Then I boil up a concentrated solution of RIT dye with some vinegar mixed in (maybe a cup?). I dump the dye solution into a one-gallon pickle jar, then dunk a string full of the washed jigs. I soak them for a couple hours, swirling once in a while. Then I rinse the jigs in cold water and let them dry. I've done black with RIT dye. They come out fine.
