besides having a sharp hook a rigid pole is required. If you are using a lite action rod or your's bends too much, you are missing the fish. I use a Penn slammer rod just for this and it works great. I started using a regular rod years ago and would snag a few but this really works better. The Penn slammer rod is for big fish like tuna. The tip of it is as thick as my pinky.
