Hi,

If you have the large Du-Bro Haywire twist tool for the largest size wire, keep it in a safe place. They no longer make the big one (still make the 2 smaller sizes). I called all over and finally found one after calling Du-Bro and asking about the status.

Maybe they would make them if enough of us wanted another one. I would figure if we placed a big enough order they MIGHT put them back into production if it was worth it for them. Just hopefull thinking!!

A friend of mine owns a machine shop I have the large du bro but im gonna see if he can make me another. If so it's a home run, if not we're back to square one. If he can make them I'll find out what it costs and let you guys know.

I called Du-Bro last year looking for the tool. They said the market just wasn't there. They did say that they were coming out with a bench top model soon, it should be out by now, but I never checked into it.

I have tried the other tools and they don't really work any better than just doing it by hand, unfortunately. My buddy has the large tool and it makes nicely wound twists.

Maybe, if everyone kept calling they would make another run of the tools. Just a thought.

Curious about this tool. I usably do around 6-8 haywire twists and than 6-8 barrel rolls to finish. My guess is this tool will do the haywire portion, but not the barrel roll? I find the haywire portion the easy part anyway.

I think I will go to a local outfitter and see if they still carry the larger size for a back up...Now that it is no longer made, I will probably loose mine overboard on the first trip offshore....

The smaller one works, but if you are making a bunch of leaders up with 480lbs wire, the larger one won't make your hand sore..imo..

pmcm,

The nice thing about the Du-Bro tool is the twist are symetrical around each other. Doing it by hand usually ends up with one wire being straight and the other wire wrapped around it. I also find that this happens when using the American Tooth wire tool as well. Like anything though, if you put in enough time and develop a good technique it can be done, it's just the Du-Bro tool made it very easy to get good reliable twist with very little effort or experience.

There is a youtube video that shows the $400 bench mount device making haywires. It is pretty fast and effortless. If you are making a bunch of these it might actually be worth it.

(not sure how to link things yet)

bench mount haywire twist tool

sure, i would never spend 400 bucks on some thing that can i do by hand for $10, but the point is it can easily handle up to 20# wire. Cool idea but i doubt many people are gonna buy it, maybe tackle wholesalers, but they probably already have a machine like that?
