I am going to a wedding in Lawrence this weekend and need some help. Coming from the Verrazano to the Belt Parkway, but not sure where I should get off the Belt.

Should I do Flatbush Ave to Beach Channel Drive? Is it at least scenic? Or should I cut across at the Cross Bay Blvd? How about Rockaway Blvd?

Rockaway Blvd means I have to get past JFK, so though it may be the most direct, it will probably be the most traffic.

I've been on the Belt (to the SSP) about 10,000 times in my life, but have never gotten off, except for a bathroom break for my wife around Coney Islan.

BAD DIRECTIONS

MM

I wouldn't give you directions that bad. I don't believe you did that.

Strike 1

Try Map Quest, Google Maps or AAA and get there in one piece. They will tell you to exit the Belt Pkwy. at Rockaway Blvd. After you pass Crossbay Blvd you will hit traffic, keep in the left lane it will break up just past the Van Wyck. After that take next exit to service road approx. 3 lights make right on Rockaway Blvd heading South.

MM

You will edit part of this post. This will be my first no no.

Best bet may be to pick up the Van Wick expressway near the airport and take that over to the LIE.

But Lawrence is just southeast of Kennedy Airport, south of the Belt. ;)

I hate taking the Belt, almost always a nightmare. Rockaway Blvd is most likely the best exit to get off on, depending on where exactly in Lawrence you are going

I've spent a lot of time in that area- the easiest way IMO will be to take the belt to sunrise highway and then turn down peninsula blvd. it might not be the most direct way but you'll avoid high traffic and confusing routes (key if you dont know if the area well). just run a set of google maps directions from peninsula blvd & sunrise highway and you'll be all set...

Ahem.... Sunrise Highway does not intersect with Peninsula Blvd until you get to Lynbrook (Very North East of Lawrence), so that is definitely NOT the way to go.

Take it from a guy who lives in one of the other 4 towns (There being "5 Towns" = Hewlett, Woodmere, Cedahurst, Inwood & Lawrence) the best way for you to go is to take the Belt Pkwy to the Nassau Expressway. You will exit right after cross bay blvd and the Nassau expressway runs parallel to the Belt. Take it to the end and it turns into Rockaway Tpke. Stay on that and it will run you into Cedahurst/Lawrence. Use Mapquest for the details, but that is the easiest way to go and the belt usually doesn't tie-up too bad until after that exit so you'll be OK. Just keep in mind the belt from the Varranzano can take you anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours.

Good luck and PM me if I can be of any help.

Belt Pkwy from Verrazano to Rockaway Blvd...on the weekend? Might get a little tied up, Strike1. Also, going to Penninsula Blvd via Sunrise is good...but you hit the same JFK traffic on Belt. Not to mention the stretch from Flatbush to Crossbay that can really be a headache.
Depending on time of day I would consider Flatbush to BCD in Rockaway. Go Beach Channel east to 75st and make a rt to Rockaway Freeway or one block further to Rockaway Beach Blvd, and go left to Seagirt Blvd @ 32nd St. Take Seagirt all the way east to 878, then go north to Broadway. Hang a rt, you're in Lawrence. Just an alternate. Good luck.

That sounds good. Rockway in the summer, I'm sure it will be empty.

Listen to Scott, take the Nassau Expressway.

PS I grew up in Ozone Park, that's the way we always went.

Ok....take the Belt. Hopefully the Belt won't be a weekend parking lot (like it usually is) between Flatbush and Crossbay. The Rock may be a little packed during the weekend but most of it will be Riis Park. Of course, you will deal with the traffic lights.

And crabby, getting to Lawrence from Ozone Park is alot quicker than coming from Brooklyn.

I used to work in Coney Island. One day the belt was flooded so I went over the Marine Park Bridge and took Rockaway. I would have done better taking Flatlands to Linden Blvd. Rockaway is not quick at all. Like you said too many lights and the beach trafic will do you in too.

Tim, the Rockaways is a good alternative if you're sitting in Bumper to Bumper traffic on the belt, but if the belt is moving, even if slow, it's only like 3-4 more miles to the Nassau Expressway. By going that way you by pass all of the traffic on the belt by JFK.

Here's a Google Earth View of the Nassau Expressway to Rockaway Tpke vs the Belt to Sunrise highway to Peninsula Blvd.

Holy crap! At this point, I'm hoping my son gets sick so I can't go to the wedding! I didn't really want to go in the first place, but my wife did.

Maybe I'll take my boat and get a cab. If you see a guy driving a boat wearing a suit and a woman wearing a dress, give a shout!
