I was not sure if Lep's board was the right place for this sort of topic, but since he is my buddy, I figured why not post it here.

Looking back at a summer that is almost at it's end, I tried to pick one thing (method, object, idea, experiment) that improved my overall pleasure while being out in the elements fishing and I thought I'd share it with you guys. I know many of you probably have already figured it out, but it could prove helpful to those that have not.

Being a "SUN HATER" I needed something to eliminate the sun burning me (more effectively than sunscreen). My first hot weather trip of the year snuck up on me in late May and I got burnt pretty good. The temp was not all that high, but the sun did it's damage to my skin and I paid for it for almost a week. Just stupid. I always forget to apply lotion until it's too late. Especially to my neck and shoulders. So, I was on a mission to solve this problem and keep the skin I have "sorta pale" the way I like it.

I went to Modell's and bought a long sleeve white "Dry Fit" shirt made by Russell off the sale rack for $9.99. I had seen these shirts for a while and wanted to try one but never got around to it. The idea behind this shirt is to allow air to reach your skin (and allow your skin to breath) and prevent you from perspiring. I figured it would be very hot but I was wrong. I was never hot in it and the air did get through and kept me dry all day. The best and most important thing it did for me was protect me from the sun! NO MORE SUNBURN!!!

So, forget all the new tactics, tackle, knots, baits, fishing spots and new boats I employed this summer. The long sleeve "Dry Fit" shirt was by far my best purchase/idea of the season! My skin has never been better in late August I can tell ya that!

If you haven't done so already, go get one. You will be very happy.

GOOD IDEA

I usually cover up as much as I can but my problem is I sweat the sunblock off and forget to apply again.

DONT MESS WITH THE SUN!

This is coming from a guy thats had about 35 skin cancer surgeries and well over 100 pre-cancerous critters removed.

My body is covered in scars and you dont even mind so much when they stitch up your chest, arm or leg, but the day they remove your whole lower lip because its all cancer and have to build you a new one is not fun!

I agree on those shirts being great for blocking out the sun

I own one similar and wear it often.
Having had a good friend get Melanoma and watching him die from it was awfull.
On a similar note there are hats that can protect you much better than most. These are the "Foriegn Legion" type ones that go over the back of your neck and around the ears. The fabric can be tucked up inside the hat when not needed and some have that piece removable.
We wear these on the Grand Canyon trips ...Its a must!
a place that will burn you to a crisp because of the elevation and clarity of the sky.

Cover up even on cloudyish days.

I purchased a Tilly hat with the 4 inch brim. My wife says I look like the flying nun but it stops the sun! Comes equipped with built in tie downs that prevent it from blowing off.
Hat is guaranteed forever and they have lived up to it already.

Here, here on the Tilly. May not be the most stylish, but definitely the most effective piece of headwear that I have found.

Foley: My brother had a melanoma scare. It's another reason I am not a big fan of the sun. It is extremely dangerous. I hope everything works out OK for you.

PaddleOn: I love that hat. Almost bought one but I use the hat you see in the pics with a white bandanna tucked under it to hang down and protect my neck. That hat is an excellent idea. I recommend it's use for anyone that plans to be in the sun for extended periods of time.

Anyone else have any tips for keeping the sun from doing damage?

The shirt that Savvy is talking about is perfect for staying cool and burn free while fishing all day. I bought a few two years ago and never fish without one on anymore. Saves your skin from burning and it does not make you hot at all. I suggest buying it a size larger so that it is a bit loose. Good tip!

The spelling of the hat company is Tilley. For those interested the phone is 1 800 ENDURES.
Heard about them during the first Gulf War. All of the Canadian troops were required to wear them. About a month later I found an ad in the NY Times Sunday magazine.
