I just read that report out of montauk about chunking up 20 bluefins about 40 miles out. Has anyone found draggers or had any luck with the bluefins inshore? Looking to go saturday. thanks

any closer?

Capt. Mike, thanks for the info. I'm out of shinne**** though in a small boat and thats a little too far for me. Two years ago the draggers were within 20 miles of the inlet and the bluefin were all over. Do the draggers usually work in closer later in the month?

no idea but it said 40 miles from the point so you could be right. but i would think there should be draggers working different areas(closer to shinny) b/c they usually are around this time. thinking about heading out and looking around.

Not just one area

The draggers work all over the place.
This report (I think) came from the area of the dump. The area that togmaster is referring to (correct me if I am wrong tog) is actually closer to Shincok (40-45 nm on 140-150' course), but further from Montauk, (50nm at 180'-185'). The NW Corner of the Dump (42NM at 110'-120') seems more in line with the report.
The draggers work that area pretty good too, and with the colder water it is more likely to show BFT action this time of year. It's anyones guess where they will be working. All August they were working right outside Shinecok, but I have not seen them in a while.
Ask around

numbers posted?

The numbers I put up were for an area I used to find them. They move with the fish. You have to figure they will be working the curves. Anywhere from the 43600 line out to the 43400 line. How I would find them is by using my radar. Most of the draggers are close enough to each other to show a nice picture on the radar. Don't forget there also may be other areas they are working. One may be the dump the other may be to the west so you have to find them? The number?s I posted were just to give you an idea as a reference. But this is a good place to look for them because we had them there for many years. Use your vhf and listen every day is diffrent!Good luck.

No....but we should have. From the southwest ledge off BI, to tuna ridge, through the dump, and along the 40 fathom line the water temp was a steady 66.5 degrees. We were looking for 70 degree water and yellow fin, which we didn't find until hitting Little Fishtails. There was a small temp. break, (68 deg.) just south of the 700 line on the west side of the dump which I later heard was holding bluefin. We did pick up 2 small YFT and some big mahi at LFT's. A long ride through 8 ft. swells. The 43700 line and the dump may be worth trying this weekend for bluefin. Good luck.

37 miles se

Hey bluefin was at Montauk and did hear of draggers working 37 miles se of the point. There were a few fish taken but not a great bite. As the waters chill I would expect the bite to get better. But this is the area the draggers were 4 to be exact so that sounds a bit east of the dump. This was Sat. so maybe there working west ? Just an idea for all to see? Godd luck and my the fish gods be with you
