I am considering putting downriggers on my 23' Grady. We fish the Eatons Neck Triangle, Lloyd point, & CSH. We chunk a lot but occasionally pull wire. Wire is no fun after the first fish because your dragging all that lead and its hard to tell whats at the other end. I am thinking that downriggers would help us cover more territory than chunking and still be fun. Does anyone have experience in this area? Do you pull only artificials? tubes?umbrellas? do you snag lobster pots in these areas? Thanks - Mike

downriggers

I've used downriggers trolling on the triangle .. used umbrellas and also swimming plugs .. mostly yozuri's .. done well with the blues but not too many bass. Pots usualy aren't a problem unless they're submerged. I prefer to chunk but if I can't snag bait that day I resort to the downriggers.

Downriggers

I'm in agreement on the pots; they are extremely annoying, but I've trolled at dusk, with a pair of downriggers and outriggers, while weaving through lobster pot fields - haven't snagged one yet. What I really like about the downriggers is the ability to troll anything, at any depth, on any tackle. I spent some time last season trolling whole herring a little off the bottom.. all your favorite surface plugs can be set right down to 100 ft. etc..

I fish Eatons Neck Triangle alot, mostly trolling. I have good success with trolling but I am not too productive chunking. I troll with wire and downriggers, sometimes depending on the crew will have four lines in the water, two each. The best Striper lure is the parachute on the end of wire.
I too like the down rigger's better but I am still perfecting the proper lures.
I think if I can get the Shad umbrellas to work properly on the downrigger, that would be the ticket. If you fish enough you will get the lobster pots, especially if it's rough and you don't see the buoys. IMO wire catches more pots. If you have a good crew and can follow the bottom with the downriggers you will always be in the strike zone.
The nice thing about the down riggers is you can do quicker turns, this is especially handy at the crowded triangle.
