Hi Folks,

I just got back from a 3 days doormat fishing trip with Rhode Islander, Capt. Gary Corsetti (ShowTime charter) and we fished the pristine Martha Vineyard's waters.

During our three-day stay, the weather was uncooperative (winds up to 35 knots from every direction possible, full moon tides, and the morning temp. in the low 40's) but every day we managed to cull several impressive doormats and a few stripers that got in our way. We fished during the holiday (Memorial day), but much to my surprise, there were very few boats working and we practically had the entire ocean to ourselves. :)

All in all, we practically had fish on every drift and majorities of our fluke were all in the impressive 6lbs. - 8lbs. range! The beauty of it all… We also managed a few in the double digits (up to 11.2 lbs.) and we were back on the dock by 2PM.

I will post several shots of our catch and hope you enjoy it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I will try to answer them accordingly.

LOLOLOL… You are too funny pal. I will tell Dano that. :) BTW: We got the start of those big fish run and it's going to last for about a month or so. Let me know if you are interested. ;)

Hey al did you use whole squid?

Funny you should ask that question… because several of the jumbos we nailed regurgitated whole squids (5"-7" long)!

I tried just about every fluke method you could think of and caught… But I found that jigging (2-½ ounce Corsetti's buckies) did most of the damages!

Just wondering: What would have been your GO-TO rig for those doormats?

Hey MakoMike,
Oooops… My bad! You got me there pal. :)
But the truth of the matter is… I really had a tight schedule and thought about calling ya. Next time (soon) I will definitely let ya know!

Hello PorgyMan,

When the conditions are right... I also enjoy bucktailing for fluke. A Corsetti bucky is a funny shaped (but deadly) bucktail designed by Gary Corsetti himself.

Below see picture... (pix. courtesy of Laptew's Production). Here I am unhooking another trophy with a pink/white corsetti bucktail tipped it with a strip of squid. :)

Hope this helps.

How deep were these fish?...When was the best fishing beginning/end of Ebb or Flood? you said that the run is for about a month...is this the same on LI/port jeff-mattituck? Where are fish heading? out to sea to spawn?????

Wow.. Those are loaded questions. :)

How Deep...
OK.. We culled most of the larger fish from a 50-70ft. Ledge!

When was the best...The magical bite was during the first two and last two hours of the "Slack" tide!

you said that the run is for about a month...is this the same on LI/port jeff-mattituck?
I was reffering to the RI/MV body of fish which migrates directly from the Ocean front.
I don't believe is the same body (North shore) of fish!

Where are the fish heading? out to sea to spawn?
If you are talking about the LI (North shore) body of fish... those fish are heading West toward the Whitestone Bridge! Also... during the fall... a big body of fish migrates to the Southside of Montauk until Sept. in depths of 40 - 80 ft! ;)

By the way, the next time you see those Fluke beauties, do you think that you could direct a few of them over towards Long Beach?

Hello Richard,
I'll see what I could do… :) BTW: There are large doormats at Long Beach waters… You just need to go deep!

Where can I buy a corsetti bucktail? How do I rig them? Would those same bucktails work on the north fork

There are a few Rhode Island shops that carries Corsetti's Jigs (Showtime Fluke Jigs), they come in ½ - 2 oz. and I know they are hard to come by. You might have to call him direct to find out where you could order them. His number is 401-739-4563

how do I rig them
Well, you simply tie directly (palomar- or- Improved clintch knot)… but the key is to keep it close to the bottom and bouncing it! ;)

Would those same bucktails work on the north fork.
I don't see why not?! There is a very reason why I ordered a big order from the Capt. ;)

Just one more question, if you don't mind. Fishing that deep, were you using a three-way setup to hold bottom? If so, can you explain the setup.

Hi MC,
That's a good question because the three-way setup is probably the #1 method many would consider when deepwater fluking. It is also very popular at the North Fork and Montauk waters. But when fishing with Corsetti, I tried the three way setup but it was not as productive because he "power drifts"! That is why we are able to use the bucktails in deeper waters;)

Yep! That is just one of the reasons why I can't go on the 23rd. :)

How long is the run and how can I get in touch with the captain?

Well…According to Capt. Gary Corsetti, he told me that it should hold up for another month or so (weather, water temp. pending). I know he is practically booked (that's why I book him waaaay in advance) but give him a buzz at 401-739-4563 and see his availability. Good luck!

Just wondering…. For all the doormat aficionado hunters out there….Where else do you know where you can track down an abundant of large doormats? :)

Al, you just might see a 20 pound fish on your next visit? Wouldn't that make for good video/stills images!

Hey bud, I wouldn't be too surprised to see the next world record being culled from those waters! Call me when you can and I will give you the details when I will be there again.

Nightcaster,
Although it is very difficult to fish a doormat from piers and beaches… Your best bets is to fish the early (first lights coinciding with the high tide)! Your odds increases greatly on the larger flukes. ;)

On the North Fork for Fluking I need 4-8 ounces of sinker weight how owuld I rig the corsettit bucktail then?

Nivekelly,
FYI: If I was to fish the Corsetti's bucktail in the "regular" drifting fashion… I would have a tough time bouncing the bottom too (regardless of the places). There is a "drifting technique" sharpies uses (to hold bottom) which lets you work the bottom with lighter payload.

Your other option is to fish it as close to the "SLACK" water phase which will give you a generous 1 ½ hour window to work the bottom. ;)

Just wondering… Are you planning to fish on a private vessel or a party boat?

NiveKelly,
That's a sweet vessel you have! Just wondering… Is that the regulator docked at the East side of the Orient Pt. marina?

Your last post begs the question: What "Drifting Technique" the sharpies use to hold bottom? I'm new to bucktailing Fluke and need every trick I can find to be sucessful.

Hello River Rat,
Good question… There are several ways to work the bottom when drifting for fluke. One way is to use a drift sock -or- stemming (power drifting) the tide with the engine.

River Rat wrote:
One more queation Al. I use the drop back technique while fluking with a standard 36 inch Fluke rig. Do you "drop back" while bucktailing or set the hook right away?

___________________________
When working a bucktail… NEVER drop back cause you are guaranteed to lose that fish! Majority of the fluke will strike the bucktail on the drop… when you lift and feel any kind of weight… Set the hook fast and hard and bring it home. ;)
