Now that the dog days are in full force and the bass are not munching on the southwest shoreline, what do the bass surf rats do?
Prepare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This message is basically aimed at semi-newbies to the surf game, so sorry if it bores some of you to death.
Instead of fishing hard and trying to desperately raise a fish I cruise the beaches looking for new(to me) holes, rips, etc.... along the south shore. Instead of waiting for the water to cool and the reports to start coming in start working now to get a jump on the coming run.
It's also a good time to play with different types of line, lures, and things, and maybe stumble across something that really works for you.
Tweak you equipment. The spring run takes a toll on you tackle whether you've been catching or not.
Now is the time to:
sharpen your hooks
install fresh line
lube the reel
and all of those other things that contribute to a good clean Hook Up.
When I first started out, missing hook ups was what I did to help keep the fishery plentiful. Then some guy asked me a question or two after he saw me miss a fish. "Did you sharpen your hooks?" "What type of line are you using?" We chatted for a few, and from that point on I was a more "productive" fisherman.
A generous fisherman helped me out without solicitation, so I figured I'd try to do the same in this forum.
Good luck and tight lines.
Keith
