Based on your experince from previous seasons do you think there will be fish cought (stripers) on the first day of the season i.e. April 15th? The area in question SI - LI. If no fish is expected, when do you think it would get good? Anything could be done to improve the odds of cathing (surf, boat, bait, location, technique, weather etc)? Last May was good for me in Great Kills, SI.

I think you'll catch schoolies and maybe even some borderline keepers. I was looking at my last couple of years logs last night and I really don't get going too much until the beginning of May. I had a couple of trips at the end of April, but mostly smaller fish. I'm not sure what the water temps are in the bays right now, but that has allot to do with it. I personally won't be out there until after May 1.

Hopefully Richie from the Karen Ann chimes in. He's the resident Striper expert (IMO).

the western areas are good early like Little Neck Bay and will produce on the 15th, by the next week, by my records, fish will spill into the sound past Northport and be in the Moriches Back bays around the same time as well.. stay west early, by the next week mid-Island- Moriches, the week after they'll be all over including Riverhead and most back bay bridges.. good luck..

LIRI,
You keep good records! I have a question, in your logbooks do you only use the left hand sided pages?

Last spring was the firs spring I fished for stripers. I only saw one fish caught on the fifteenth. It took another week before the action started to pick up. They were all small though in the spring. This year though, with a bunch of fish already being caught, the bite might be good by the fifteenth.

I spotted schoolies breaking water, chasing Spearing over two weeks ago (March 11). You can catch schoolies deep in the back bays all over the South Shore, right now. Fish when the water temps are at their warmest of the day (around 48 degrees now). I make trips in early April to get back into the rhythm of the area?s I?m fishing, by the third week of April I?m fishing hard for those 15 to 25 pounders. The big girls come a little later.;)

Richie and Vinnie are already scouting the areas...They were out today and will be out tomorrow as well...Got some encouraging reports already...

But to answer the question....THERE ARE ALREADY bass in the area...Western LI sound has decent amount of schoolies already and so does western south shore...

By April 15th there will definetely be plenty of stripers with bigger ones mixed in...Especially in the western areas...

Worms, small bucktails, any spearing profile lure.

Water temps at it's warmest of the day depends on the area you fish and the tide. Water standing still in the middle of the day in the sun, with an out going tide in the afternoon would be best, especially if it's a warm day.
This tuesday, with temps in the 60's, check your tides ;)

i second that leo! hey vip, this early on the fish are going to be in the shallows!!! so work the shallow areas, marshes, ect. blood worms are a great choice this early in the game. as well as artificials. but go alittle on the smaller side. fish now are smaller. once the water warms up and may roles around bigger fish will come in. small bucktails will work great now! Im also getting word that the bunker are here! but if the bunker are big (11in or so) , they are to big for the scholie bass. wait untill the bigger fish move on in to live line a couple. PM me if you need anything. tight lines!
