My be you fellow pescardorians
can help me.

I am lookng to buy a hundred or so of the old Mustad extra long shank
bunker back hooks # 92618 in 7/0 or 8/0

Mustad stopped producing them but some one or a tackle shop might have laying in some dusty corner.

I tried every where and on the net no luck.

I use them tied in tandem with a sliding 7/0 Gami Octopuss hook for
Fluke

Now I am using 9/0 bent surg tube hooks that I straighten out but thats a pain.

Thanks

Sam843, try 92623 which has the special long shank, unlike 92618 which has the special extra long shank. I do not know why you want such a extra long shank hook for fluke since the octupus hooks work so well, and is what many of the pros use on Long Island. Are you sure you are fishing for fluke not halibut? Those surge tubed hooks which are limericks, are pretty strong hooks.

Another thing for you is to goto the tackle shows during the winter...i have seen this hook sold along with other Mustad discontinued hooks by a few tackle sellers...i always have my eye out for certain hooks not made by mustad and this is the best place to find what you might need.

Last but least, try Terminal Tackle in Kings Park who is the largest seller of Mustad hooks in our area....never know what he might have down the basement.

Thanks I tried terminal and Merrick tackle.

I use them to rig whole squid 6 to 10 inches long
I fish alot at Montauk on Eddies Marlin VI out of MontauK and I don't use a net unless it over 8lbs I swing them in and I need a strong hook that won't bend.
Was using two 7/0 Gamis but After two or three big Fluke their teeth would fray the line between the set hook and the sliding hook and I dropped a few big fish when the line snapped when I lifted them in.
With the long shank hook the squid stays straight on a fast drift and the fluke swallow the squid head first and all they get is steel in their teeth
I use to use this same rig years ago in Sheepshead when we got a bug to go for big fluke down by old Bouy 21
or the rocks at sea Bright we used half a Mackeral or bunker fillet
This year I crushed the big fish down the south side at Montauk.
Eddie is one of the best fluke fisherman I ever fished with.
Last trip I made with him I had 25 keepers not one fish under five pounds. I had 7 fish about nine 2 over 11 the rest 5 to 8.
Never had fluke fishing like that in my life.
Like Eddie would tell his mates he from Sheepshead Bay he no need a stinking net.

Sam843...boy i can see what that rig actually does, and it makes a great deal of sense. Now you got me thinking about making a few of these rigs for the run of big fish in Greenport in May. Very unique, but i do know of one captain who uses big B2 squids in almost a similar fashion. This is one tip that i might try this year! And if i see those hooks, i will pick up a box or two, and contact you.

Sam did you try a bead?

Hey Sam when fishing the way you stated for fluke the big hook is very good. but it is hard to find. What I like to do is crimp a bead 6 to 8" above the hook. then take a rigging needle and go from the top down to the head. . then i attach the leader to the needle and pull it back up and tie on my swivel. the bead stops the squid from moving down the hook and gives it a natural look. The hook I like is the 92533bl 8/0 is very strong and must need some sharpeing but these hooks have the lifting power your looking for. Try this and see if it works. You could tie hooks tamdem for this also.

Togmaster yes I tried the bead and a rigging needle but I find that with fast drifts and rough bottom cause the bead to break through the Squid
and if you get hits from small fluke and sea bass the same thing happens and the squd bunches up.
I find that with the sliding 7/0 gami I can adjust the rig faster to the size of the squid and the squid can take more punnishment and still look natural for when big eye balls it going buy.
As for the hunt for big fish I fish Greenport but you can't beat Montauk for the shear number of big fish.
Eddie Benducci who runs the Marlin VI loves looking for big fish
He power drifts along Wrecks, and hard bottom humps looking.
He dosn't jerk you off with 2 mile drifts over short country
Some of his drifts he makes are just 50 to 100 yards.
And he knows whats down on the piece
he"ll say this spot holds a few big fish and bang 8 or 10 fish in the 7 to 10 lbs come up and than he says okay we got em all next spot
the man is good.

When the bead fails

sam when the bead fails I sew the top of the squid to the leader and sometime tandem hook the squid and this works well. I know what your talking about just giving you some options if you cannot find the long shank hooks
