can anyone recommend a quality unit? I am rigging a 33 blackfin for canyon fishing. I am intrested in hearing from those that have units installed on their boats. I am intrested in simrad, furuno etc.

I second that as far as buying a furuno machine. The 1100 would be my choice for a inshore/offshore machine. The Koden machines are also excellent, and if you want to go more upscale, the Simrads are incredible machines but pricey.

A few more to consider

Yep, that new Furuno 1100 is a nice piece. But the other nice LCD unit in that class, and IMO even nicer than the Furuno (display-wise, NOT control ergonomics-wise) is that Simrad EQ42. What a beauty. I just have never seen an LCD screen display like that Big Simrad, and I've looked at and used all kinds of machines in my time.

I understand that Simrad has gone to a newer, even higher-contrast extra-brite screen for 2003, well worth looking at before you drop the jing.

If you want a conventional CRT - for its superior resolution - then I can definitely recommend the unit I use on my rig - the SiTex CVS211. Its got the 10" screen and 1000W of power and the picture it paints of the bottom in "Bottom Lock" mode is just stunning. You should see what the bottom at 17 looks like on my machine. Those bergalls show up really nice swimming around the rubble. ;)

A coupla things to consider when making this choice.

1- Is this boat fully covered? Because if not, then the big LCDs will prove superior to the CRTs in regard to resistance to sunlight washout.

2- Are you planning to leave the display on the boat or tote it back and forth to the boat? If you are leaving it, then no problemo with the CRT, but if you are carrying it back and forth, then you best have arms like Popeye, or you will certainly develop them lugging that big CRT around. I speak from experience here.

The NY Boat Show is coming. Looking at the boats for me at least, is an exercise in frustration, financial and otherwise. But what IS intersting is getting to see the latest electronics, and have them displayed and explained by the actual reps of the various manufacturers instead of salesmen from the retailers.

That's where I'd start my investigation. Its where I went to decide on my electronics package on my current boat. And I STILL like the choices I made, 7 years ago. Good investigation leads to solid long-term satisfaction.

An interesting feature on the Simrad EQ42 is user adjustable power output from 1KW down to 600W, 300W or whatever you deem necessary. Nice for shallow water use.
