I will be in barryville,NY camping this weekend on the Deleware river (northeast PA portion of the river). I never freshwater fish but what should I go for and what are some good versatile lures or baits good for this river?

Largemouth and small mouth you can use worms and crayfish. If there is a place to buy shiner/minnows those will be great. If not, chances are there are sunnies and perch in the river. A size 12 hook(its really small) and a tiny piece of worm should get you some small sunnies. Anything 4 in or less is perfect but bigger can still work. I am not really a lure guy some maybe somebody more into lure fishing can help you out. Hope this helps. I would hook the shiners through the back(not too low or you will hit the spine) and send them out there under a float. Same thing with live sunnies and perch. Send them out with no float or wait if nothing happens on the top. Good luck. let me know how you do. Also, if there is a local bait shop or even if you see a park ranger or someone else fishing they should be able to help you out a little bit on what baits, lures, parts of the river have been hot lately.

Make sure you throw some spinners and spoons. Also bring a rappala or 2. I love banjo minnows- you can go onto their website and buy a kit. They really work great- the only product I ever bought from an infomercial and I've been using them ever since- 10 years or so-- try some topwater lures at night. I like jitterbugs and crazycrawlers. Good luck and hope you do well.

See a post I did about a week ago entitled Delaware River Smallies.

Barry is about 7 miles further South than I go. Assuming conditions are similar, for a beginer it's tough to be the simplicy of whacky rigged Senko. Smoke Hologram with sparkly flakes or almost any color with sparkles. Use swivel to avoid line twist. Main thing, use ultra light tackle if you have it. 4lb test. I use 6lb Suffix braid. No weight. Just stick a hook through the middle of the worm, pitch it in, twitch it every few seconds, repeat.

I find that with lures, spinners and such I snag up too much. Only one I continue to use is blade baits like Sonics. Metal gets them down where you want. Even then, I clip the bottom hooks off the treble so if they kiss the bottom there's less chance of hang up.

Helgramites also can't fail for smallies if you go bait. I was going to use the other week, but they were a buck a piece at the shop in town. If you can find one under a rock, put a hook thru the back of it's neck and you're almost guaranteed a fish. Just, obviously, watch the pinchers.

You do require to have a fresh water fishing permit, a NJ, PA, or NY license will do. You may be fishing on private land, but the river is not private. The river runs thru all three states. Don't save that few dollars and end up costing you a day going to court with a fine.

Pete....How did it go?

I am curious. I am going to be going up to an area close by this weekend and planned on hitting up the river. Any luck?

I used to fish smallies all the time in Wisconsin. Berkley Power Worms rigged Texas style almost always did the trick.
