It looks like the fluke are at Ambrose and most most of my fishing is going to be in deeper water with heavier weight for the rest of the year. Last time out i was using 12 oz and still struggled at times to hold bottom with the current/drift. I beefed up my outfit (Shimano CPCMF70MH)and it seems to handle 12 oz fine. Im not catching as many fish as i think i should, though. Been fishing various combinations of bait/Gulp off of a 3 way with teaser about 12 inches up, usually fish a spearing on the teaser.

What do you guys do different when you are fishing deep later in the year in terms of rigs/presentations/tactics?

I tend to fall off the jigging and B/S Rig dragging and favor big baits mostly. Whole squid on a tandem rig is my personal favorite. Followed by Peruvian spearing and long pendants of various fish strips, inclusive of the true sharpie's bait - 10" thin strips of dogfish belly.

best, Lep

Not sure if you are fishing mono or braid but braid could help you to go lighter on the lead. That in itself will help you feel slight pick-ups of your bait much better in the deep water and strong current of Ambrose. Also, you might wanna shorten your hook leader. Experiment with leader lengths between 2 & 3 ft. I found my hook-up ratio improved when I went shorter in strong currents.

As Lep said, bigger baits like whole squid and cut bellies paired with big spearing, peruvians, mullet, etc. are excellent when going deep.

I was fishing the Ambrose Channel earlier this week (8/22) and had NO drift at all. The water was like Yoo Hoo and we hightailed it from there. Personally, I'm not a fan of fishing that area. I guess it's because we are spoiled fishing 30-50 feet 99% of the time. Using in excess of 6 ounces of lead usually means it's time to move for us.

Deep water fluke bait

Morning guys-

Like you all have said, whole squid in the appropriate size is such a great bait for deep flukin off the South Shore. That being said, I always seemed to have a problem finding squid in the correct size, for the most part, the squid I'd get in tackle shops was either too big or too small. For whatever reason, I never thought to look no further than my local supermarket, untill now
! The Pathmark on Merrick Rd. in Seaford sells 5 lb boxes of frozen squid for a reasonable price, usually about $5-$6. The squid is for the most part perfect size for using whole, and usually remains in excellent shape after defrosting, providing it's kept cool.

Just wanted to pass that along to any other guys in SE Nassau who are looking for a great source for whole squiid

I use one of two outfits, either the Shimano CPCMF70MH with a Calcutta 401 TE and 30 lb Spectron or a Seeker BCSW 807-8T with an Abu Garcia 4601 C4 Winch and 15 lb Spectron. I know the Calcutta is overkill for fluke but it is better than any other reel I have for the job.

Last time out we fished both Ambrose and Chapel Hill. I shortened up the leader to about 30 inches, used a 3" Gulp squid in new penny with a squid strip and a teaser about 12 inches up with spearing and I did ok. 2 keepers, biggest was just over 3 lbs and a lot of shorts. Not a great day by any standards but no one else on the boat did much better.
