Last Friday at night I hit something floating that destroyed my prop and knocked the skeg off my outdrive. I have pulled out four large pieces of log and wood this season so far. This is just a request that if anyone sees somthing dangerous to please try to haul it out. I'm sure the people that are reading this already do. (Preaching to the choir)

A couple weeks ago while running back from an offshore trip, I came across a 5 by 5 type piece of lumber that was about 5 feet long. I realized that that thing could cause mucho damage so I threw it on my swim platform.

I got stopped by some water pigs, and thye asked me "what I was doing" so I explained...but they didn't understand that I wasen't dumping the piece of lumber instead I was just taking off the water..it took a great deal of explaining, but it was worth it. I may have saved someones outdrive.

Good Deeds

The above post have some valid contents as far as being concerned for others. Even though you where stopped and felt slighted and suspected you did the right thing. Your termonology of people that patrol our waters and look for people doing illegal acts could use a little work.
I guess you were a little annoyed that the suspected you but that is there job and at least give them the benifit of doubt that they are doing there job. It could of very easily been some A#$$$$$ who didn't care when or where he was doing something wrong and believe me there are plenty of those type of people to go around.
If you see large depry in the water pick up the radio and but out an alert to people in that area, or notify the CG or police if needed.
Your hearts is in the right place and you did the right thing.

You see I was running back already...indeed I was already in the main channel, when I got stopped. Then I explained to these guys what I was doing and they didn't believe me....I mean just looooook! I'm coming home with this thing not going out. I had fish in the box, the boat was filthy, bait was on the board etc. It was obvious I was returning.

But hey I have the highest respect for on the water Police Officers (Water-Pigs) and understood that it's thier job to be suspecting of people.

HEY GUYS I WAS TRAVELING THROUGH THE AMBROSE THIS SATURDAY WHEN BEFORE I KNEW IT I WAS ON TOP OF A 10' PIECE OF TELEPHONE POLE. IT HIT SO HARD THE HOLE BOAT SHOOK. WE ASSESED THE DAMAGE, NONE TO THE 2001 200HP HPDI YAMAHA THANK GOD, THE TRANSDUCER POPPED OFF AND WE FOUND A QUARTER SIZE HOLE IN THE HULL. WHAT A DISASTER. THESE PILLINGS COME FROM THE FERRY BOATS UP THE HUDSON. I SEEN THIS HAPPEN. THEY SLAM INTO THE BULK HEADS, HUGE PILLINGS FALL OFF AND THEY LET THEM FLOAT AWAY. THOSE FERRY BOATS ARE STEEL SO WOOD ISNT GOING TO AFFECT THERE TRAVELS, BUT US BOATERS ARE THE ONES WHO GET ALL THE DAMAGE. IT IS A DISGRACE. AND THEN THEY HAVE THE NURVE TO TRY A BLAME SOMEONE DOING A GOOD DEED BY TAKING THIS CRAP OUT OF THE WATER. GOOD JOB GRADYSAILFISH.

Well I don't know how one can move a telephone poll sized log around...for that I would just call the costies and let them handle it, but the smaller pieces I and everybody could take out.

How bad was the impact? How badly was your hull hurt..anything else damaged aside form the hull and transducer?

Boy oh boy, to survive an impact like that you must have a good boat...I'm sure my Grady would prbably shatter into pieces if I hit a telephone size piulling.

Thats why I never run at speed at night..even though I have radar. Radar just can't pick up a pilling floating 6 inches below the water (you know they do that)

I wonder though, when a boat hit something like that dosen't the log (or whatever it is) get pushed down into he water and the boats hull rides over?

I know when a friend's head gets hit by a 50mph speedboat, he gets pushed down. Even when the speedboat and the snorkeler's boat are the only two boats visable on a Wed. afternoon, in the flats. Even when the snorkeler is 15 yards from his boat, with a flag up. But I digress...

Removal of Debris

Grady,

You did the right thing, however I have to agree with Bill (Baywatch) that your choice of words to describe those that patrol the waters leaves plenty to be desired. Just rememember that when you are out in the water and need their help don't forget to wave them off for the "pigs" might dirty your boat with mud. It seems that they are damned if they do their job and damned if they don't. No personal interest in the issue, just utmost respect for those that will risk their life to save mine without thinking twice.

Food for thought!

Yes you guys are right... but don't forget I don't mean to call them "pigs" in a truly disparaging manner. Honestly I respect them, and always abide by thier rules, and where possible help them out. Also I thank them for what they do. I just used that terminology as a comic relief..if it is inappropriate I apologize and state again that it is only in a joking sense.

HEY GRADY

ITS A 2001 22' GRADYWHITE SEAFARER. WENT TO PUT THE BOAT IN THE WATER AND SOME SALT WATER WAS IN THE BOAT. I DONT KNOW IF THIS WAS FROM THE QUARTER SIZE HOLE IN THE HULL OR SOMETHING ELSE. I PATCHED THE HOLE UP WITH SOME FIBERGLASS IT SHOULD HOLD I HOPE. I DIDNT LOOK AS IF THE HOLE WENT THROUGH THE HULL, BUT WILL TEST THE BOAT THIS WEEKEND.

Nite time

Sounds like most of this is happening at night ??
NDorado...you were very lucky...be grateful the pole was floating length wise and not vertical.
Vertical poles in additon to being harder to spot (which you will never see at night anyway), can punch a hole the size of a hub cap in your hull.

I've spent a goodly amount of time this year running at night through Moriches bay, always on my mind is the thought of striking an unseen object floating on or just under the surface. I have a small 16' V hull (1962) and wonder if the hull would disintergrate from under me if that were to happen? The year of my boat gives me a little hope because I believe they used more Fiberglass back then but at 25 mph I'm guess I'd end up disabled and on the radio calling for the CG. In the bay would you think the potential for floating debree is higher during the Ebb or the Flood tide? I try to keep an eye on the water, you can usally see something is amiss on those calmer days, it changes the characteristics of the water but night is night and your vision is never as good as during the day. Backing off on the throttle might not be the answer, how fast do you have to be going for debree to cause major damage??
