well, if I ever wondered why people buy custom rods and why wraps are so important, I found out yesterday on the Celtic Quest Lounge Lizard charter!

the rod Cany won at the Bash last March (built by Seane) was SCHWEET, and I saw money changing hands at the dock between Slick56 and Capn Neil. when I saw Slick's rod I was in awe

Sinkerbouncer had another Capn Neil special, with his boat's name inscribed

I even heard talk of the outrageous work Billy40 does, but never saw one of his bad boys

VERY NICE WORK FELLAS

I was surprised at how little John Sinkerbouncer paid for his rod...not that much more than a name-brand

I have to order a Long Islander series rod from Neil...to match my tee shirt

There without a doubt some great factory made rods available today. The big manufacturers with huge deep pockets do some heavy research before commiting to produce a product. That being said I find it amazing how the custom builders can build their rods and sell them at such reasonable prices. Sure there are some guys just out to make a buck but the vast majority of builders I have come to meet are happy to build a rod that the customer will be happy with and proud to own. Most of these builders barely make a profit, the cost of parts has gone up drasticaly. I take my hat off to them and thank them for what they do. Hopefully someday Ill be in their caliber and will build rods that people will be proud to own and fish.

So true, I've fished good factory and customs. By custom I don't mean hand wrapped, I'm talking measured for my arm length and height, etc. There's a noticeable difference even over well balanced, light weight hand wraps. All things considered, when you look at the prices of high quality factory, custom is well worth it over the long run. Up front it may seem big, break the difference down into dollars per trip and its near zilch.
I was trying to make money doing custom rods in the mid-70's. I agree, there wasn't enough markup to cover the hours of work on top of the parts. I gave up after a very few.

A custom rod is designed for you and your style of fishing. You work with the builder and aid in the design. You get to decide on most every aspect of the rod.The better builders will help you make the rite decisions.

When done properly its woth all the extra money!
