Going to costa rica in feburary,looking for any info. i can get from you guys out here.PLan on fishing from shore on pacific coast.Need any info. of location and tackle,lures, etc. to use while there. Any info.would be appreciated.

Unfortunately I never fished Costa Rica during that month ? But the month of February is generally a good time to fish the tropical waters! During the Feb. months, I?ve fished many Central American countries including Mexico and South America? Regardless of the quarry you seek? the # 1 item you should use is Fluorocarbon leader in the range of 10lbs. ? 50bs. test! The tropic waters are generally gin clear and most of the fish are incredibly line shy! If you are planning to fish the shorelines? The ?small? swimming lures (plugs & plasitcs) in the silver/blue, Olive/white and plain white seems to do the trick. Also, make sure you have a few tins in your arsenal? tins such as kastmasters, hopkins, Hooligans, Charlie Graves and Krocks are good!

As far as tackle is concerned? It is a good idea to bring a flyrod in the 6-10wt (shorelines), medium spinning and baitcasting outfits that holds enough 10-20lbs. test line? and probably a stout 7?-9? conventional outfit with a reel that can hold approx. 300 yards of 30-40lbs. test!

Other items you should have are wire leaders, suntan lotion, extra hooks, sunglasses,camera and a hat!

If you are seeking trophy fish - The best hours to fish is night ? first light! This is the time where you can catch various shoreline predators such as snook, cubera, roosters and other big quarries.

I had the best luck in fishing the beaches of Costa Rica with 77M Mirrolures. Each evening just around sunset the sardines gather around the beaches and there are plenty of jacks along with some bonita. Just casting around the edges of the the bait schools is pretty productive at times. Also a Krocadile spoon works well for the sierra mackerel which also invade the bait schools. If you want snook, the river mouths are generally a good place to start and again I am partial to the same Mirrolure as above, with the green back being my favorite color. The estuaries down there have some HUGE snook, but I can't begin to explain to you how to access them. These are spots that were shown to me by locals and are on bumpy dirt roads that require 4 wheel drive. If you stumble across a fishy looking estuary, live bait (mullet, small jacks, etc.) are the ticket. For the most part I fished the beaches between Caldera and Jaco, but the best beach fishing is south of Quepos towards Dominical where you will find more exotic fish such as roosters and cuberas. Ditto on that. The warmer water is south of Quepos and will fish better in Feb than north. You might try a small panga or renting a kayak to get into some better fishing; you might be too limited just from the beach.

Crag offers some excellent advice regarding getting some type of a boat. Your options will increase 10 fold. Much of the Costa Rican coastline is rocky and not easily accessible by foot. If you can speak any Spanish at all, you can get a local fisherman to take you out on a "panga" (small outboard) for his expenses plus some extra dollars. He will not know much about rod and reel fishing, but he will know where to take you for whatever fish you are seeking. Good luck!
