I use both and are you looking for a no-levelwind?
The deal is if it's a non-level, then you get more distance, but you are required to guide the line on the spool on the retrive.
Some levelwinds disengauge (spell?) the levelwind when casting, but I feel that you need to center the levelwind before casting to get the max out of the cast.
The levelwinds that don't disengauge work well, but distance decreases.
If your fishing "windy" surf casting, then a MAG reel will help with backlashes...
