I made a post earlier about an Abu Garcia 7000i CS pro rocket I bought, now I just bought the rod, it's a Penn spinfisher 12' rod.

I went to the park and tried it out, great distance on it, but what I realized is that the guides when you fight a fish will be facing up (not down like I am used to with spinning reels) - can this cause a problem, could the rod break because of this????

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

the guides should face up on a conventional rod. i have a abu garcia 7000 left hand retrieve bait casting reel and a 10' g loomis rod. the guides are facing up. the guides on all baitcasting rods face up. the rod is designed that way , to distribute load evenly.. its made to reel in that way. look online . you must reel with the reel facing up. not down. if you try to reel it like a spinning rod you will pop off all the guides and or break the line. cant fight or catch anything that way. thats my 2 cents....good luck omf24!!!!!!!!!!

OMF24, If you just bought the rod and still have the recipt just exchange it for a conventional rod to match your Abu reel otherwise like Headchef71 said you will damage your rod and/or your line....
JMHO..Best of luck....

You must get a conventional rod. A spinning rod is NO GOOD. Conventional rod has small guides which must be facing upward
. Your rod-which is a spinning rod has large guides tapering off to smaller guides-which must be facing down
and is for spinning reels. Bring your SPINNING rod back and get a CONVENTIONAL or BAITCASTING rod. Same thing.

The guides on a conventinal reel are put on the back of the direction the rod naturally bends, on a spinning rod it is put on the under side of the bend. The action of the rod will be off, not to mention poor distance casting and line rubbing.

Hmmm, interesting thoughts on the "must be up/down" I'm not so sure this is a MUST BE cuz I watched a guy drag a 30 up on the beach one night with the spinning reel on top and a red-dyed clam on the hook !!!

when every rod is built there are spined to fit the location of the guides...bend your spinning rod backwards and see what happens....

I took the rod back today, bought it froms Sports Authority. I looked at their other rods and could not find a conventional surf casting rod. Does anyone have suggestions as to a good rod I should look into? I'll head to the bait shop this weekend.

Thanks!

Ugh!! Why does anyone go to Sports Authority? There are local tackle shops that need your money more than SA. They have nothing I can't get at my local B&T. Even if it costs me an extra buck or two I feel it's worth it. If there are none near you then you can find those with websites. Make the effort. The guys at the shop are more helpful than any SA employee ever will be. They will help you out on where and when to fish, give you tackle and fishing advice and a place to hang in the offseason when you need a fishing fix. The most you will get from SA is crappy service, if you can find anyone in the first place. If you take advice from a kid (excluding Snapperman
) whose biggest concern is if Mom can take him to the movies, then you need more help than you know.

Hi Toyota,

I think you missed my poor attempt at sarcasm
Spinning, conventional, whatever, I wrap all of my own so I have a pretty good grasp on the spline concept. :) Thanks

Hey, OMF24, I'll tell you what. I have a conventional rod built on a a Lamiglas 136 4M blank. Other stix have replace this one so it never gets used anymore. This blank does a nice job chunking. It is used but is in GREAT shape.

If you like, I'll meet you in Moses lot you can strap your ABU 7000 on it and I'll show you how to bomb it out there if you want. If you like it I will let ya have for what I'm sure was MUCH less than the Penn stick from Sports Authority.

Now that is an incredibly generous offer
