Last year I was given an ABU GARCIA 6500CSMAG ELITE reel. I put it on an ABU GARCIA 8'6" Conolon Classic rod rated for 1/2oz to 1 1/2oz lures. The reel casts beautifully but I feel the rod is too light for fishing the south shore surf. Can anyone suggest a good but relatively inexpensive rod for this reel for casting all types of lure up to 2 or 2 1/2oz lure? I've seen LAMIGLASS and LOOMIS rods but the price seem prohibitive. It seems the choice in coventional rods is limited. thanks for your advice.

Hi ralphfr,

Have you looked at any St Croix rods. They make nice factory rods as well as Diawa, Shakespeare Ugly Sticks and also Seeker.

I pwersonally stay away from Loomis but I like Lamiglas.

Remember, you get what you pay for. That does not mean you have to pay a Kings Ransom!

CONVENTIONAL SURF ROD

Thanks for the advice. Now that you mention it I have seen the ST CROIX rods but I was hoping to spend a little less, around $100 or so. It looks like the "or so" might have to be expanded a bit. Thanks again for the input.

I agree with Captneilf and others. It all depends on the length of the rod you want. You can find St. Croix having many different size to choose from. In terms of cost, I am using a Daiwa Sealine X, SL-XS1002MHRB MH R 10' 2 15-30lbs, 3-6oz. about $65.

I use it for lures and bait. It is affordable and light enough for casting lures and bait.

Dont buy this rod if you a short person. It may be too long for you.

Consider the Breakaways

They make some pretty nice rods for lure fishing. Three that come to mind are the 114 (9 1/2 feet), 1266 (10 1/2 feet) and the 1418 (11'9").

The 1418 is relatively light for such a long rod and has lots of power. Its kinda like a sooped up lami GSB 1322 Medium. Its my go to rod for long distance plugging.

I think the breakaways are less expensive than the lamiglass and loomis.

BREAKAWAY

Thanks for the info Tom. They look like really nice rods. The prices seem to be between ST CROIX and LAMIGLAS. The only one of the rods that is conventional however is the 1266 at 10.5' at around $225. That's still mopre than I want to spend though I'm sure that it is worth the money. It seem those rods a re very popular among the long casting crowd. Thanks again.

i have a daiwa sealine rod, its a great rod, sensitive, fast tip, its up to 3 ounce lure casting weight and can hold 8 ounces of lead with ease. i usually use this on a boat. i prefer spinning combo while surf fishing. But the sealine series is a great rod for under 75 bucks! and if you use conventiol reels for surf fishing the daiwa sealine would make a great choice.

a rod jut as good for, 65 bucks is the shakespeare ugly stick tiger. i get alot out of this rod. light enough to fell a little tap from a porgy and strong enought to land a 30 pound bass. this is a great rod and can be used for throwing lures but is a little light for livelining bunker. Experiment, try the rods out.

OCEAN MASTER

Thanks for the input REELNEEL. I have already ordered and received one but have not tried it yet. The price was too good to wait. Now I feel better knowing you have one and like it. Hope to get out this weekend.

You’re fishing the tributary with a estuary rod.
Now you got a surf rod that throws 4 ounces.
You spooled that dinkey reel with 40 pound breaking
strength braid. You smacked the rod in a tradewind.
The lure doesn’t have aero dynamic properties.
You blew up the reel and all of the bells and whistles
in the reel got thrown out of whack. It’s called a bait caster
for a reason. What are you throwing and the conditions
you’re under makes the difference. A spinning outfit
is designed for this type of fishing. It’s user friendly.
